$500 Crocheted Socks?!

By Rachel Choi – 24 Comments

I got a good laugh after a Crochet Spot reader told me about the most expensive hand crocheted socks by Rodarte. Selling for $500, these netted styled socks are made of silky mohair. Due to the fine yarn that is used, these socks can not be washed, instead it is to be spot cleaned. I’m not sure who would actually purchase these socks, would you buy them?

Check out this quick video to learn more about the socks:

What do you think about these $500 crocheted socks?

In all honesty, although it’s insane enough, it’s not so much the price that bothers me – but socks I can’t throw in the wash!? Seriously? Something I wear on my feet!? So, I guess the answer is no, I wouldn’t buy them

  2. Jackie says:

I agree with Mary B..If I can’t throw them in the wash..I would not buy them…

  3. Jessi says:

Totally not! Socks can not ever, EVER be spot cleaned. Unless they are somehow decorative socks and meant to be kept on the wall. And then, why socks?

  4. Sandra says:

I agree… Silliest thing I’ve seen crocheted. I get yarn-graffiti. I even understand the appeal in a car cozy and the uniqueness of a water tower cozy. (See lionbrand.com’s blog for the pics of some strange knit and crocheted things.) But silk mohair socks? Nope. Don’t get it. And I definitely would not crochet them OR buy them.

  5. Nanny says:

    1. I’d get very cold feet in those socks
    2. I wouldn’t be surprise if they made the soles of my feet hurt.
    3. They can’t be washed.

That means that they miss almost everything socks should have or be, so they aren’t socks.
I’d rather have $ 500 worth of cheap socks that keep my feet comfortable.

  6. Rachael says:

I wouldn’t buy them. But it is neat to see just how valuble crocheting is 😉

  7. Zuleika says:

Thats insane!! They cant be washed and they have holes in them. What’s the point of overpriced socks you cant even use? lol

  8. Nancy says:

I wouldn’t buy these socks either, but it is very interesting to see what people charge for their projects.I wonder though how many pairs of those socks exists?

  9. Mary beth says:

Wow that’s an awful lot of money for socks, can you imagine how much yarn you could buy for $500

  10. Namiko says:

I guess if you can shell out $500 for uncomfortable looking socks that you can’t wash then you can have people carrying you around all the time so you don’t have to walk in them? Other than that, I got nothin’.

    Someone is seriously loopy !!!

  12. lorrwill says:

I’m with the folks who think these are absolutely stupid. I especially like the lady who pointed out the lack of comfort due to the net design.

These are for extremely rich, not too fiscally intelligent people who can wear something like this once and toss it in the trash.

And there is the question of under what conditions these were made…I am not finding any redeeming qualities for these at all. (Other than the funny reactions in the video.)

  13. happy grandma says:

Thanks for the laugh I needed that! Like everyone says socks with holes are not my cup of tea! living in Montreal it would definitely not keep my feet warm in -30 degrees weather!!! As a young kid I remember wearing fishnet stockings which were so sooooooooo uncomfortable and you could barely walk in them…mine were constatly ripped ooops! just so I didn’t have to wear them…so in the end we get a pair of stinky soks that are soft but probably itch and cost $500 – I can find something else to buy with that kind of money!

  14. corliss says:

Video won’t load for some reason …… Even if I could afford it , why would I want them . I wear socks from the dollar store. Can $500 still buy a plane ticket ?

  15. arwin says:

how absurd!! sox u can’t wash??? i agree with the person who mentioned the ‘fiscally impaired’ $500.00 would buy a lot of sox for the needy.

  16. Bananas says:

they remind me of fish net stockings, same idea. just there for play and not actual useage.

  17. Essie says:

I live in a sub-tropical climate, so would not have to worry about the socks keeping my feet warm. LOL. But even if someone carried you around, you still sweat and the socks would get smelly and then you can’t wash them? UH UH not for me

  18. Julia says:

I saw another clip on Yahoo last week where they showed 7or 8 different high priced socks…Armani, Prada, etc….the least expensive being around $300. Personally, I’d rather buy yarn! lol! And I like what Rachel says regarding the value of the art of crochet! However, the Agatha Christie in me would be curious to find out just how many pairs did sell.

  19. charlotte says:

Thats crazy 500 I wouldn’t buy them hopefuly that person can sell them.

  20. John Hablinski says:

My, my, my, $500.00 for a pair of the most impractical socks I have ever seen. Maybe I’m mistaken, but didn’t I hear somewhere there are people in this world, this country, this state, this county and this city who will be cold this winter? Hmm! $500.00 socks… Makes me proud, how about you?

  21. Heidi says:

Ummmm Absolutely not!! I live in Nevada and everything is dusty and if they cannot be washed…..I really think this person needs to have their head examined! I guarentee that even Jerry Lewis who never wears socks twice would never pay that much!

  22. Mandy says:

Hmmm.. perhaps they are more tights rather then socks… I think they look quite nice on the model. But $500! I’ve only bee crocheting a short while but I feel like I might be able to make these!

  23. Valorie D says:

I saw an article about a woman ordered a $3500 cake for her daughter’s 2nd birthday party – so I guess it’s about how much money you have and what you like.
