  21. Alys says:

In Example 3 in “How to Read Crochet Patterns” (http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-read-crochet-patterns/ ) it says “make a double crochet stitch in the next 3 stitches”. Does that mean make one double crochet stitch in EACH of the next 3 stitches – i.e., make three double crochet stitches altogether? Or does it mean make literally “a double crochet stitch” – i.e., make only one stitch in total that somehow stretches over the next three stitches (presumably by dc’ing in the just the middle stitch in those three stitches)?

    • Rachel says:

Hi Alys, you’ll make a double crochet stitch in each of the next 3 stitches, so that you’ll have a total of 3 double crochet stitches.

    • Beverly says:

Yes, Ali, you are right. Make a dc in the next 3 sts does not mean make 3dc in the next 3 sts. No! It does (as you guessed) mean to make 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts.

If it were to be 1 dc over the nxt 3 sts, it would be a reverse shell and this would be that the next three sts are all worked up together into just 1 st.

You’re doing great at understanding how to read patters. Feel free to ask anywhere that people crochet and they’ll be more than happy to help you with any crochet related question.
