Crochet for Boys

Boy Oh Boy! What to crochet for a boy? All I know is, if I am going to spend all that time crocheting a sweater for my son, I want him to LOVE it, not just tolerate it. And I want the design to capture all the qualities that make having him around fun.

When crocheting for a boy there are some obvious rules to follow…

  1. Must be comfortable!
  2. Nothing Lacey or frilly, (no duh)
  3. No PINK unless it is related to blood or creatures that mom would prefer stay OUT of her house.
  4. When it comes to clothing, boys don’t do fluttery drape – the bulkier the better. They feel it enhances their muscles!

With those rules in mind I realized there are tons of boyish themes that are hardly touched when it comes to the crochet world – Cowboys, aliens, dinosaurs, bugs (gross ones). So I have set out to design my own patterns using my son as inspiration.

One of my favorite things about my son is his growl. He growls and grunts at everything, just like a dinosaur! Using this as inspiration for my first sweater, I designed him the DinoROAR sweater. When I put it on him, he did what he always does! He growled and ran! But I could tell he liked it because he pointed at the dinosaur and smiled. And boy did I have to wrestle him to take it off!

This is great for a small boy!….I do have a question….do you have patterns to make the letters that you’ve added to the front of the sweater?…I’ve tried, unsuccessfully, to make capital letters and I’m hoping to find some patterns for the alphabet.

    Thanks.
