Crochet Pattern: Charming Change Purse

This change purse would make the perfect handmade gift for a little girl, a teenager or a grown woman!  By using different colors and styles of buttons the purse can look as versatile as its many uses. This pattern includes instructions for using two small buttons for the closure, feel free to experiment with different types and styles of closures and then share them with us here!

Skill Level: intermediate crochet skill level

Finished Size: Approx. 4″ (10.16 cm) long and wide

Materials:
Sport Weight Yarn
Approx. 35 yards
Crochet Hook E (3.5 mm)
Two buttons no bigger than 3/4″(1.90 cm)
and no smaller than 1/2″(1.27 cm)

Note on Weight: pattern shown using mercerized cotton to give the purse a ‘stiffer’ feel and retain form

Gauge: rows 1-2 measure 1″ (2.54 cm) wide

Crochet Pattern: Cutesy Change Purse

Row 1: ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn: 30 sc

(work remaining rows in back loops of sc only, unless otherwise instructed)

Row 2-14: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn: 30 sc

Row 15: sc in first sc from hook and in each sc across, ch 1, do not turn: 30 sc

Row 16: (working in the top of rows 2-15) sc in right hand corner, *2 sc in next st, skip next st, repeat from * across, ch 1, turn: 16 sc

Row 17: 2 sc in each of the first 4 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sc, 2 sc in each of the last 4 sc, ch 1, turn: 20 sc

Row 18: 1 sc in each of the next 8 sc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, 1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 8 sc to end, finish off: 24 sc

With RS (see The Right Side and The Wrong Side in Crochet for more info on this) facing you, fold bottom of purse up, approx. 3 inches above and below the fold.  After folding join both sides either by whip stitching (Whip Stitch Tutorial) or by holding the two sides together and putting a sl st through each matching side.

Turn inside out.

Sew buttons onto body of purse, approx. 3/4″(1.90 cm) down corresponding with ch-2 spaces.

Finish up and weave in ends, make it pretty!

    I am making pillow case dresses for little girls – this will make a cute purse to match- I am going to try using ribbon to match the dress for a handle:)
