Crochet Pattern: Christmas Tree Hat

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – 6 Comments
What better way to show your holiday cheer than to wear a Christmas tree hat? My version is a cone hat made mostly in hdc, topped with a happy Twinkle Star on top and decorated with a few sparkly “garlands.” The ribbed band of the hat is made by alternating front post double crochet stitches (fpdc) and back post double crochet stitches (bpdc). Because of the stitches used and the hook size used, the hat will pretty much stay in shape on your head, unlike most cone hats or stocking hats. For the garlands, I used two kinds of yarn: one is a worsted gold yarn, and the other is a fingering weight yarn–size 8 thread wound with metallic thread. Feel free to decorate your own Christmas tree hat as you wish, after all that’s what Christmas trees are all about: unique decorations!

Skill Level: crochet skill level easy

Finished Size: (When laid flat) 10″ wide at widest point (band) and 12″ tall (without star applique)

Materials:
Medium Weight Yarn in dark green, brown, yellow, black, and gold (or other sparkly colors)
Crochet Hook G (4.25 mm) for hat body
Crochet Hook F (3.75 mm) for star applique
yarn needle
crochet yarn size 4

Gauge: 8 hdc stitches x 5 hdc rows = 2 inches

Notes: Ch 2 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as stitch. Throughout the body of the hat, at the end of the rounds sl st into the back loop only (blo) of first hdc. This hides the seam somewhat and prevents the hat from folding at the seam.

Star:

With yellow and black, make two of the Twinkle the Happy Star Appliqué. You may or may not choose to embroider a face on the second star, on your preference. Leave a long tail for sewing the two appliqués together on top of hat.

Garlands:

With gold (or any other metallic/ sparkly yarn, (Ch 8, sl st in 3rd ch from hook) 30 times, ch 5. Finish off. For the sample, I made two garlands.

You should have something like this:

Assembly:

Making sure to make all knots in the back of the work, tie one end of a garland to any stitch in round 27 (the last round using dark green). Drape garland around the hat. Tie other end of garland to top of hat. Do the same for the other garland, anchoring it in another stitch. Sew the top three points of the two stars together. Sew lower two points together, with the point of the hat inside, sewing through all the thicknesses.

Make your hat all your own! Get those creative juices flowing and make it as colorful and bright as you want. If you need any help just let me know by leaving a comment below. 🙂

Happy holidays, everyone!
