Crochet Pattern: Earflap Cap

By Candace – 22 Comments
Summer’s almost gone, so it’s time to think about keeping warm. What better place to start than right at the top? The flaps on this hat will keep your ears as toasty as your head while you enjoy the cooler weather. Wear this while you admire the changing colors of the leaves–or jump in them!

This is a no-sew project, so finishing should be a cool fall breeze.

is the sl st in top of beginning ch-3 part of the 8 dc

  4. Sandra I says:

yes Faith it looks like it is.

  5. Angie says:

    Who would this fit?

  6. Elizabeth says:

next time you should have a picture of you/someone else modeling it 🙂

  7. Candace says:

Faith: The beginning chains do not count as dc’s.
Angie: It should fit a teenage/adult head.

  8. faith says:

thanks Candace will redo it because I wasn’t sure like the looks of it might give it to my dad though wouldn’t I have to go more then 14rounds to fit a guy’s head?

  9. Candace says:

Faith, it would depend on how big his head is. You can use the gauge as a guide to (evenly) add stitches around the hat for a better fit, so it will go over a larger head without stretching and losing length.

  10. Angie says:

Thanks Candace! I can’t wait to try it!

  11. Sharon says:

I’m looking for earflap pattern, also, for babies and toddlers. Are their patterns on Crochet Spot for them?

  12. Sharon says:

Thank you, Rachel. I do like your site with all the variety it has to offer.I will try the method you suggested.

  13. Esther Carr says:

I have many, many patterns for hats, but this one I made in 2.20 hours
with both 3 and 4 wgt yarns. Absolutely the best pattern and quickest
I have ever tried. Thanks for so many great patterns.

  14. Varsha says:

Looks good so will try it in bright multiple colours so does not look mannish! Tks for super idea.

  15. Esther Carr says:

I made these for 2 of my g’kids. Using the nice soft
medium weight yarn is great, but I am not sure the
ear flaps are strong enough to keep the ears warm.
Maybe they are just intended for something funky,
but I think next ones I make will be in a #4 yarn.

The items I made from your website as a member,
went over 100%+. My daughter sold 20 items in
one lunch hour, and gave me 4 special orders to
    be done by October’s end.

Thank you Rachel and team for giving me the boost
I really needed. As a primary artist, and all the
arts/crafts shows I attended, were small in sales
and very disappointing. Now I’ve found crocheting
    is my niche!

  16. Carmen says:

    Hi!

Can I use two strands of yarn to make the earflap cap? I would like for the cap to be a little thicker.

    Thanks!
    Carmen

    • Rachel says:

Hi Carmen, you can use 2 stands if you are able to obtain the same gauge using the 2 strands. It is likely that if you can’t get the gauge correctly with the 2 stands of yarn your hat will turn out to be too big. If you’d like a warmer hat, but only use one strand of yarn try using yarn made of wool as they seem to be a but warmer than acrylic or cotton yarn.

(2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc)

newbie here, not sure if I do 2 dc every other one or just start with the 2 dc and continue with the single dc around?? hopefully that makes sense lol.

  18. Candace says:

Rachael, the parentheses indicate that the instructions inside them are repeated, so it’s 2 dc, 1 dc. 2 dc, 1 dc, etc.

  19. Rachael says:

    thank you 🙂

I’m new and my question is How do you finish off in a round?
