I like this idea very much, but as a librarian I must comment that the thickness of regular yarn would make a bookmark too thick for the spine of a book. The same pattern in a thread would be much nicer!

  2. Zesty says:

Agreed, Betty. Even if you can close the book easily on the bookmark, the spine would be stressed with a medium weight yarn. In a weight used for tablecloths this would be the perfect bookmark to crochet. The shape is symbolically apt (nice intro, Candace), and the design is simple, yet unlocks doors to expanding the project: What about making several of them in different colors and running a ring (giant keyring, which could be either solid or just a closed crocheted chain) through the loop at the top of each key (for your favorite bibliophile, of course). If you want to get advanced, you can filet the name of each favorite genre on each key, or embroider it or appliqué it. I mean, this project just screams, “Personalize me!”

Thank you very much for the idea and pattern, Candace and Rachel.

I agree with both of you about the yarn weight if the key is being made for a bookmark. But if its being made for a fridge magnet or ornament, a meduim weight yarn would be perfect.

  4. To the previous commenters, I wonder if it’s designed to just sit in the book whilst it’s open (and not being read), a bit like a paper weight so the pages don’t blow over.

That’s a very good idea! In which case it could be made of two pieces sewn together and padded, like a pillow. (I’ve seen leather padded bookmarks like that in the Levenger catalog.)

I think a sports yarn weight #3 would be lighter but would work as a bookmark without injuring the spine.
