Maggie, it is very possible that you are adding stitches. After completing each row, try counting the number of stitches you made before going onto the next row.

I’m making this for my cousin, only since it’s a Christmas present, I’ll be using the snowman applique, which I’m making now (it’s looking good, although I’m pretty sure I’ve left the pattern a million times. )
