Crochet Pattern: Skull Motif

Halloween is creeping up, and it’s time to decorate. Skeletons and skulls are popular seasonal symbols, and they are everywhere. What’s more fun than making your own to add to the mix? This skull motif is versatile and can be used as an applique, an accessory, or anything you need to add a spooky touch to your outfits or decorations.

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 2″ (5.1 cm) diameter, 2.5″ (6.4 cm) tall

Materials:
Fine Weight Yarn (20 yards)
Contrasting Yarn (Any weight, 1 yard)
Crochet Hook F (3.75mm)
Yarn needle

Gauge:
Rounds 1-4 measure 2″ (5.1cm) in diameter

Crochet Pattern: Skull Motif
Round 1: Make an adjustable ring, ch 1, make 8 sc in ring, sl st into beginning ch-1: 8 sc
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, sl st into beginning ch-1: 16 sc
Round 3: ch 1, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) around, sl st into beginning ch-1: 24 sc
Round 4: ch 1, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) around, sl st into beginning ch-1: 36 sc
The following instructions will be worked in rows, rather than rounds. Do not finish off, continue with pattern.
Row 1: ch 1, sc in first 8 sc: 8 sc
Rows 2-3: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 8 sc
Finish off.

Using a yarn needle and contrasting yarn, embroider the skull’s facial features.

    I think I would do the nose a bit differently – more like an upside down V rather than a horizontal stitch but other than that, it’s cute.
