Crochet Pattern: Wise Old Owl

Owls symbolize wisdom and education. You may have finished your formal education a long time ago. However, you can never learn too much! Why not make a list of the crochet stitches or techniques you want to master this year! We should all strive to continue our education no matter how old we are or if we are enrolled in formal classes. Add something new to your learning priorities this year! This wise old owl is quick and easy to crochet. He can be used as a bookmark, applique or pin to serve as a reminder that you’re never too old to learn!

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 4″ (10 cm) long and 2 1/2″ (6 cm) wide

Materials:
Fall Tone Wool Medium Worsted Weight Yarn (approximately 8 yards)
Crochet Hook H (5 mm)
Black, Off White, and Orange Felt
Embroidery Needle
Embroidery Floss
Scissors or Pinking Shears

Gauge:
3 sc stitches = 1 inch

Crochet Pattern: Wise Old Owl
Row 1: ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc in next ch, ch 1, turn: 3 sc

Row 2-5: sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn
Row 6-9: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn: 8 sc
Row 10-13: skip first sc, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn
Row 14: sc 3 times in first st, skip 2 sts, 3 sc in last st, finish off.

Assembly
First you need to cut two wings out of black felt. You can use straight edge scissors or pinking shears to do this. You will also need to cut two very small round circles from off white felt and an orange beak. Then, use a needle and 6-strand embroidery floss to attach the wings to each side of the owl’s body with a running stitch. Next, place the felt eyes on the owl and attach each with a french knot. Finally, stitch on the felt beak.
