Crochet Sport?

Hey, Crochet Spotters! Are you Crochet Sporters, too? 😀

With both the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics dominating the U.S. media recently, I got to thinking about what a fine combination sports and crochet are. How many of you were playing with yarn and hook during the Superbowl & Olympic Opening Ceremonies? I most certainly was yarn crafting (and tweeting) the whole way through!

As I’m sure most of you know, joining crochet with sport is nothing new! I thought it would be fun to list out a few ways (both formal and informal) that we can enjoy various sporting events while weilding hooks!

The Ravellenic Games – Created to coincide with the Olympic Games, the Ravellenic Games is a fun yarncrafting adventure hosted on the popular yarn crafting website Ravelry. Participants begin their projects during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games and craft through the closing ceremonies. The point of the Ravellenic Games is to challenge oneself, whatever that means to the individual, and anyone can volunteer to join! Participants can join a team or compete as individuals. Finishers cross a virtual finish line and get a cute graphic as a “medal.”

Stitch N’ PitchStitch N’ Pitch is a really cute tradition that brings together needle arts of all kinds and baseball! During baseball season, there are formal Stitch N’ Pitch days at major and minor league baseball games. The point? To have fun and build community while supporting our teams! Stitch N’ Pitch is hosted by The National Needle Arts Association (TNNA). In fact, the world record for the most people crocheting at once was set in 2010 at a NY Mets Stitch N’ Pitch event! I want to go to one this year!

Crocheting at the Game (or at Practice) – You don’t need to go to a formal Stitch N’ Pitch to crochet at the game! Simply pack your crochet bag and go! Don’t want to go alone? As you may have suspected, on Ravelry, there’s a group for that. 😀 One thing is for sure, no matter how the game or practice is going, you’ll never be bored!

Crocheting in Honor of Your Favorite Sports Team – We’ve talked a bit about Superbowl crochet, and there are several die hard U.S. football & baseball fans that stay true with crochet. Of course, while doing my research on Ravelry, I found 92 groups that were tagged with “sports.” Gleefully I discovered active fans of football (a.k.a. soccer), cricket, Formula 1 racing, quidditch * does that exist? * and professional cycling. There are many more!

So, how do we honor our favorite sports teams & players with crochet? One obvious choice is to crochet in team colors, and Lion Brand has a super bulky weight yarn specifically crafted for that purpose called “Hometown USA” I personally love to work with it.

Crocheting while Playing Sports – This entry is a little tounge-in-cheek, but maybe not. I’m not a very sporty person, but has anyone out there ever crocheted while playing sports? If so, how? Do share in the comments below!

So, what did I miss? In which other ways do sports and crochet come together? What have you crocheted for a sporty reason? Do share all in the comments below!

I am a bowler. I take my crochet with me EVERYWHERE. When it is not my turn to bowl, kjj crochet. I’ve found that it calms me and helps me to focus on my next frame/game. Most times, others asks questions about crochet. I take joy in talking about my craft/hobby.

I designed and crocheted a special single mitt for my husband to play disc-golf in the cold. You can slide your hand out to grasp the disc and throw it without completely removing the mitt (and probably dropping it in the snow).

My boss told me about disc golf! I would love to learn to play it! Your glove sounds perfect and I bet your hubby’s friends are jealous! 😀
