It's all automatic, so if you pay the first time on the 1st, it will automatically bill on the 1st of the next month. It doesn't track whether you download anything or not. But once you do subscribe you will be able to download any pattern in the store for no additional charge, including all the new patterns for as long as you are subscribed. Whether you decide to go with the membership or not, once a pattern(s) is paid for you can immediately download it from the site. There's no wait.
