Crocheting at Jury Duty

By Rachel Choi – 14 Comments

If you haven’t heard, I recently had my first day of jury duty! It wasn’t dreadful as many like to describe. In my opinion it was pretty fun. All I really did was crochet. I was making a baby cocoon, and the lady that sat close to me must have forgot to bring a book to read, so she watched me crochet as if I was a TV show. I thought it was a little weird having an audience. The biggest audience I’ve ever had consist of my cat. I would have taught her to crochet if I wasn’t using boucle yarn (you know that stuff is a nightmare for beginners to learn with).

On the jury duty side of things, I didn’t get picked. Believe it or not, I was disappointed because I wanted to see what it would be like to be on a jury. Well, there’s always next time!

Sorry for your not being picked, Rachel. 🙁
Would you want to post that pattern for the baby cocoon though? I’ve actually been looking for one with no luck.

Hello,Hello!! Have you ever used handspun yarn before and if so what is like . Is it ok for crochet?

      Hey Joy,
I haven’t used handspun yarn yet, but when I do I’ll be sure to write about it. Maybe if someone else reads your question, they may be able to tell you more about it. Boucle is really soft (at least the ones I used), so I like to make blankets and baby things with it. When I was at jury duty I was making a baby cocoon with a matching hat.

I’m sorry you didn’t make it onto a jury! The people who were picked would probably change places with you in a moment!! 🙂 Crochet is awesome because it’s so portable. 🙂 Now I’m gonna check out the pattern.

You’re lucky you could bring a crochet hook to your jury duty. I wasn’t allow to do so in Baltimore during the many times I was called to jury duty. We got to sit in a room and watch videos all day, or just read books. Serving on a jury is interesting … I only served on one, for a “he said, she said” series of accusations where everyone just needed to sit down with a counselor. Met some interesting people, had a great judge (who sent out thank you notes afterwards), and had the one hold-out be the person who came up with a finding on which we could all agree (not quite like the movie “Twelve Angry Men”). The defendant was a Housing Authority police officer and the hold-out had trouble finding him guilty of anything. Once he figured that out, he offered the best solution.

I’ve enjoyed your blog as a life-long crocheter (I’m 58 now but spent many years of my childhood making chains!).

It’s new for me to have someone watching me crochet, but now I’m in two groups in the Pittsburgh area that crochet and knit together: Three Rivers Crochet and a MeetUp group in Butler PA. It’s great fun to chat and crochet. I’ve usually crocheted while semi-watching tv, and evading my cats who in the past wanted to play with or eat the yarn. My current cat does not seem all that interested in it. She’s just bothered if she thinks I’m not paying attention to her!

If any of you are ever in Pittsburgh, Three Rivers Crochet meets most every Saturday at a Panera Bread location not far from downtown. Just google (or whatever) for Three Rivers Crochet and you’ll find the blog with more information.

I’ve also been to a crochet/knit party to make hats for children in Guatemala. The host’s office has an annual mission trip to Guatemala in January and takes hats with them.

I have the crochet pattern if you’re interested in seeing it. It’s clever and easy.

I know what you mean about “being watched as if I were a TV show” — I crochet on the commuter train to & from work, and it seems like people can’t get enough of watching me! About once or twice a week, someone will ask what I’m making, but every single day there are watchers.
