Favorite Yarn Shopping Destination?

By Emilee Gettle – 22 Comments

If you’re like me, you’re passionate about shopping for all things crochet! Although I’ve never seen a bumper sticker, “I brake for yarn stores!” I think I could easily apply that one to my car. I love shopping at fiber arts shops and just absorbing the whole creative atmosphere. I especially love the privately owned storefront shops. Their owners are always quite passionate about the topics I am and are especially helpful with any questions I might have. It’s like finding a long lost friend! Walking in a creative oasis provides a sensory overload of patterns and skeins of glorious yarn!

I have a favorite store in Petaluma, CA called The Knittery that I always look forward to visiting during my winter vacation. Housed in a turn of the century building and tastefully decorated it is an inspiration and a breath of fresh air!

AC Moore is always a favorite. I could spend hours (and millions) in there. But I really like picking up unique handspun yarn at craft fairs or sometimes even in second hand shops.

Swisher’s Yarn Basket in Danville, PA is the place to go for a yarn shopping experience like no other! In addition to the amazing selection of color & texture, the shop’s center contains a circle of rocking chairs, inviting the visitor to sit & knit, crochet or simply relax. Shop owner, Carol, is always happy to help with suggestions on yarn, advice on projects, and to enjoy your company.

I really like Hobby Lobby, but there is a yarn shop in Queens, NY and they have all kinds of yarn. but it is so far I don’t go there often

Mary, how much is the yarn typically at Swisher’s? I’ll be making a trip to Danville in the next month, and maybe I’ll have to swing by there!

My favorite is Joann but I just learned there is a Purl Soho shop in Tustin CA which is not to far from me so I am going to try it soon.

I like – Nina in Chicago. That´s a really good one. Do you know that I lived within an hour of WEBS in Northampton for almost my entire life, but I didn´t start yarncrafting until after I moved! I think that Western Mass has a LOT of good yarn shops!

I don’t think I really have a “favorite” but, I do enjoy going to Ben Franklins in Bowling Green, they have a decent selection and the prices are reasonable. I also like Michaels Arts & Crafts too, they have a HUGE selection of yarn.

Where I lived before, I could always count on JoAnn’s … but the new local JA is somewhat disappointing. (The chain stores really just go on a store by store basis!) Happy to report the new local Hobby Lobby’s yarn section is three FULL aisles. Woo! They don’t have the hooks that I like, but they’re not lacking for fiber. 🙂 Now, when are they going to mark the stuff on sale?! …

    Hi Riah,
Swisher’s Yarn Basket has yarn of all prices…. from the moderate to the higher priced speciality yarns. My favorite are the hand-dyed sock yarns, with the beautiful cottons coming in a close second. Lots of great wools too.

My favorite place to buy yarn is Joann’s cause they have really good prices on yarn (not so good for fabric:)

My favorite yarn shop in is Indianapolis, IN called the Knit Stop. OMG, she has everything and the ladies there are so friendly and helpful.

I’ve only been crocheting for about 9-10 months now and I still enjoy going to JoAnn Fabrics. I’ve gone to yarn stores and they are sooo beautiful! I have to run my hand over every different kind of fabric. Some day, when I am a little better and have the skill level (and money!) to buy yarn from a yarn store, I’ll treat myself and make something beautiful!!!

My favorite somewhat local place is Michael’s. They opened a store on the same side of the river and about a half hour from me a couple months ago. There is a Hobby Lobby just over an hour away and when I am in the area I like to stop in there to get the I Love This Yarn. The local WM will do in a crunch, but they have a very limited selection.

One of my favorite shops is in Mammoth Lakes, California called The Green Thread. We often drive up to Mammoth because my husband and kids love to ski. It is a win win for everyone because they ski, and MOM stays at the condo, alone, and crochets with the yarn from Leslie’s shop.

My favorite place to buy yarn is EBAY! Lots of bargains there. 🙂

There is a cute little yarn shop in Mendocino, CA. It was so nice in there. They even allowed my dog to come in. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford anything in there but it was a lovely store.

I am SO excited to learn that Hobby Lobby is opening a store not far from us. I’ve never been to one. I’m limited to Joann’s and Michaels in our area.

I do love to look for little yarn stores in towns where I might be traveling.

  18. I guess Hobby Lobby is my favorite, too. I am absolutely crazy about their yarn…I love this yarn! All versions of it are great. currently, am using Baby Bee (also Hobby Lobby’s brand) and their sports weight ILTY, and they are wonderful. No spliting, soft, great colors…the best. Their cotton yarn is the softest of any I’ve ever used.

  19. Oh, yes, I forgot. Hobby Lobby also has great yarn sales ever so often. They stuff all the sale yarn in bushel baskets and display them so you can easily see what’s in there. You can get really cool yarn that you wouldn’t pay say $6 for at half that price. Cool.

Heavenly Stitches is a new shop in Lima, Ohio. My mother-in-law, her sister-in-law, and myself went to this lovely church-turned-yarn/quilt-shop. The owner of the shop held the place open until we arrived there and didn’t mind as we meandered around their quaint establishment. I live in Indiana so going to Lima every other weekend really isn’t practical, but I can’t wait to go back there and get more yarn.

In Noblesville, IN there’s Always in Stitches. It is a neat place to shop for yarn.

I saw that someone mentioned Knit Stop in Indy. I just passed by that place yesterday while down in Indy but I didn’t have time to stop. I’ll have to make a trip sometime soon.

I have a “Ana-cross stitch” shop in anacortes wa. And a “Knot just yarn’ in the next town over. Love the family feel that they all have. a lot of my friends just go down their if they are stuck on a pattern and need help. their is a large wood table there you can just sit and stitch!
