Free Crochet Pattern: Slouchy Beanie
| The slouchy beanie can be worn in many different styles. Slouch it to the front to form a floppy brim, slouch it to the back for a relaxed look, or to the side as a traditional beret. This beanie is able to fit my head, which is small, and my friend’s large head since it’s made to be loose and roomy. Just in case you find that it doesn’t fit the way you like, there are instructions for altering the beanie in the pattern. | ![]() |

Round 2: ch 3, 2 dc in each dc, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 at beg of rnd: 24 dc

Round 17: ch 3, (dc2tog, dc in next 3 dc) around, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 at beg of rnd: 48 dc
Note: by now the bottom of the beret should fit snugly above your ears. If it is too loose, add another round of decrease and if it is too tight, remove round 17.
Round 18 – 19: ch 3, dc in each dc around, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 at beg of rnd: 48 dc
If you would like your beret to be longer, repeat the last round in the pattern as desired.

Madriver7, color changes can be tricky! Here is the link to a post that tells you more about changing colors: How to Change Colors in Crochet For this beanie, I would suggest changing colors when you make your beginning ch 3. Just drop the old color and hold your new color and start crocheting with it. You can carry your yarn if you desire, but I think it will show up on the inside of your beanie.
Thanks for the link. I had looked at that and will try it. The hat I was looking at had alternating colors every two rows. When I looked at how they carried the color up, it looked like the color was “woven” into the posts as they went up so when the color was needed, it was already at the right place and no weaving. Pretty cool! I just have to figure out how it was done.
Hi! I wanted make a cute beanie for my best friends birthday, but I have come to a problem. I don’t understand Round 3 etc.: (2 dc in next dc, dc in next _ dc) means. I think it might mean crochet 2 dc then skip a hole then do _ dc in the next hole. please give me a hand real quick! Thanks!!
Hi Lydia, say for example the line read “(2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc)” It means that you are doing to do 2 dc in the next stitch, then do one dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Here are more detailed examples here: How to Read Crochet Patterns
how do i crochet 2dc togather?
Jean, here is the link to the tutorial: dc2tog
I am a beginner at crochet, any advice on how to scale the pattern down for a 1 yr old?
thanks so much!
Hi Claudia, it’s hard to say without actually doing it myself, but in general you would continue to increase the hat until it is about 2 rounds larger than the circumference of the head. Then continue the crochet without increasing until the beanie is as long as you desire. Then decrease so that it fits on the head.
hi rachel figured out how to crochet 2doubles togather easy
Thanks Rachel, I have started by making the adult one and then see where I can go with it. I love the pattern, your instructions are great! thank you so much.
Hi, I don’t quite get the part where it says: Round 1: ch 4, 12 dc in 4th ch from hook, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 at beg of rnd: 12 dc
I get that you have to chain 4, then in the 4th chain you have to double crochet 12 times, but i don’t get the rest… Can you help out?
Hi Lealah, after you made 12 dc in the forth ch from your hook, there should be a chain 3 at the beginning of the round, which is actually a part of the ch 4 you did at the beginning. The”sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 at beg of rnd” is telling your to make a slip stitch at the top (the third chain) of the chain 3, so that you are joining the end of the round to the beginning. This creates a small circle.
Love this pattern! I’ve made this hat in 4 different colors and everyone asks me where I bought them! WhenI tell them I made it, they ask for one too! Thank you for you blog.

Ah great pattern, Rachel! You rock!
I have a question that you can hopefully help me with. So I just finished one of these hats but it’s a bit too tight around my head. It seemed fine when I was at Round 17 so I didn’t add the extra round like you said… is there any way to make the beanie looser without frogging the last 2 rounds?
Hi Vicky, if the beanie fits at round 17, then it should also fit at rounds 18 and 19, since you are not adding or subtracting the number of stitches in the rounds. You are just making the beanie longer. If it is too tight, remove round 17 and then work rounds 18 and 19.
hi Rachel, do you think it will fit my little sister? She’s ten.
thanks!
Hannah
Hannah, it might be a little too big for a 10 year old, try measuring her head if you can.
Rachel, I am still new to crocheting, and I tried the pattern, but my hat is ridiculously big even though in rows 8-14, I took out some rows and only did 8-11. The pattern looks beautiful, but the hat is twice the size of my head. Suggestions?
Robin, at round 14, the beanie is suppose to be extra big. This is what makes it slouch later. After you do the rows with the decreases (dc2tog) it should start to fit your head.
Hmmm. I have done the decrease rows and still wayyyy big. But I will just keep going with the end and see what happens. Thanks for the quick reply!
If it’s still too big, be sure to check that your gauge is correct and each round has the appropriate number of stitches.
