How Often Do You Wear Crocheted Items?

By Rachel Choi – 29 Comments

A Crochet Spot reader recently asked me how often I wore my crocheted creations. At first I thought it was a weird question to ask, but after thinking about it I realized that I probably don’t wear my crocheted items as much as I think I should. Being a crochet addict and pattern designer I have to admit I have a ton of crocheted items. So many items that I’ve filled an entire closet. You’d think I’d wear something crocheted everyday!

To be honest, a lot of times when I crochet items I try to make things that others want, not necessarily what I would personally need or use. I find myself giving away crocheted items as gifts more often than wearing them myself. Other times my work sits in the crochet closet just in case I need to reference it if someone has a question about the pattern. Sadly I forget to wear the items when they’re tucked away in a closet.

I do have a new determination after thinking about the lack of crochet items I wear. I am super proud of all the things I make, so I should wear them proudly as well. Maybe I’ll choose a new item out of the crochet closet each week to wear. That should get me started wearing crochet items more often!

What about you? How often do you wear crocheted items? Do you wish you wore crocheted items more than you do now?

  1. I try to wear something I’ve made every day. Much easier in the winter when wraps, scarves, hats, etc. are de rigueur!

I spent the first 20 years after I learned to crochet making things for other people. So when I turned 40, I decided to make only things for myself (with the exception of blankets for new babies) for a year or two. Now during cooler weather, I wear a scarf or shawl that I crocheted just about every day, and when I want something extra pretty, I wear a crocheted overskirt. And I’m almost done making a really nice jacket!

since I was a baby I’ve always worn crohcet or knitted items, it was warm with love in every stitch and back then a lot more affordable to crochet then to buy something premade, so know I do the same for my daughter

I have made several hats and scarves and when it’s colder I usually wear them every day. I also made a shrug and sunhat that I wear in the summer months. I’m planning on few other shrugs and a purse in the future and I’m sure I’ll wear/use those too.

Thanks for answering my question Rachel.

Technically, I wear something crocheted everyday, because I have a crocheted bracelet out of string tied on my wrist. Other than that, prabably once every 2 weeks.

  7. Angie says:

I make hats, tons and tons of hats, for myself and others. So, I wear lots of hats (mostly in the Winter) but, other that…I haven’t been brave enough to make any other clothing (shirts, vests, skirts, etc). So, I wear an abundance of hats and scarves.

How interesting to read how others started crocheting. I made and gave away capes and
afghans when I first started, I forget what age I was, but I was living in Colorado then. When I realized I had nothing for myself to use, I made afghans and shawls for myself that I use every week in winter. Made several scarves for myself and family last winter in knit and crochet patterns. But recently I learned a beaded crochet bracelet pattern and have since made over 100 of them. I wear at least one & sometimes two most every day and have given away many to my 3 daughters, friends and granddaughters.
I live in Texas now, so light items that can be used in summer are what I have been making.

I have made a shrug, lots of earrings, necklace, rings, headbands, bracelets and scarves for myself that I wear all the time. Though most of the things I made are for gifts or charity.

I made several pairs of wristlets last winter and wore them every time I went out. I also have crocheted hats that I wear in the winter. When my arthritis isn’t too bad, I would love to crochet a few vests to wear. I love vests. I also crocheted a red sparkly shrug that I wear on occasion.

I mostly wear scarves I’ve made, but not every day. Mostly during cold weather months. I give away a lot of what I make for gifts and donations. (Too often I just don’t make time to make things for myself!)

I wear a crocheted hat whenever I go out. I don’t wear other crocheted items in warm weather, but in cooler weather I like to wear a crocheted vest over a blouse or stretchy top. I hardly ever wear my long-sleeved sweaters because they are just too warm and bulky.

I have made quite a bit of items for myself and for others, as well as items i have sold etc. total of 140 some (that i document on ravelry) not including the items i have sold( about 50 plus). The scarves/fingerless gloves/hats/wraps i am starting to wear now because of the colder weather. I did wear a few bikini’s i made over the summer as well as a tank and a few other accessories. I try to wear something i have made at least 1 or 2 times a week so it seems like im using them lol.

I made an oversized shawl that became a triangular afghan because my husband likes it so much. That stays on the bed all winter (This is Michigan. Winter is practically nine months of the year!)

I wear a crocheted hat almost everytime I go out of the house; cotton summer hats, warm winter hats, and berets in the spring and autumn.

I have a couple shawls, but hadn’t used them much until recently. I just made a good, sturdy, warm one to use more often. Two other shawls are for dressy or evening wear, so I only use them once or twice a year.

In winter I always wear a hat and scarf I’ve made. I don’t have any store bought hats left anymore except souvenir caps and a few straw hats I decorated myself. I wore one only once this summer.

I crocheted some market bags and a small zippered pouch which I use whenever I go out. I’d like to make a purse and a tote bag this winter.

Amazingly, in four years I haven’t made any major clothing pieces yet. Just accessories and jewlery, and gifts for others. I hope to change that this winter.

The only things I’ve made that I wear regularly are a beaded necklace and a hat – otherwise, I’m always crocheting for other people!

I wear my crochet items often. I have crochet for everyone else for years and now It’s my turn. I just love it.

    Hello, Rachel !
I wear my crocheted items daily, and since I love thread crochet, I make it a point to wear either my crocheted headbands and/ or chokers, daily.
A few years ago,in a dollar store, I had seen come “crochet” – looking headbands, and wanted one, but money was tight ,and I had to forego that headband. But when i got home,I had written down what I had seen, took the notebook to the dollar store and counted out enough for the headband. I had bought a bag of yarn/thread at a yard sale and went home, with the notebook,a steel crochet hook, and began mimicking the crochet pattern, and viola !
A red with cream headband. I added elastic and there it was. I had made one in black and off white ( I didn’t have many colors to work with at the time and no white, just off-white) ,one pink and one lavendar. Since then,i have used edgings as chokers, and designed many chokers as well, using charms and pendants. I use a #7 hook, and a #10 hook to get thru the small holes of the charms. I have sold one, and I sold it right off my neck, at Wal-mart, for 5$.

    Hi,

As others, I wear my 2 knitted/crocheted jackets, poncho in the Fall when the weather is cooler. My mother made them for me over 15 years ago and they are still in great shape! She also made me many crocheted and knitted sweaters, hats and scarves which I wear from time to time. She also crocheted many jackets when my daughter was little (she is now 36) and this year her 3 year old daughter can wear it too!! When she was a baby she had several different knitted/crocheted layettes and dresses including her Christening gown. Her daughter wore it after the Christening at the restaurant. I also have a scarf which my grandmother made me when she lived in Canada for a year. She passed away 30 years ago so it is more of a memory keepsake than something to wear. Goes to show good quality yarn lasts forever!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Monique says:

I’ve made and worn many pairs of slippers. Worn out actually! I’ve now designed my own with a removable outer sole so when that wears out I can whip it off and put on a new one ๐Ÿ™‚ At the moment I’m working on sizing up that pattern to make a pair for my Dad. I don’t wear scarves or hats, but I have made many as gifts (and slippers) which have gone as far as Greece and the USA (I’m in Australia). I have also made 2 cardigans, but I’m having an issue with those. When they are first made, they fit perfectly, but within a few hours of wearing them, they start to drop! The first one I made started out mid thigh length. Once it hit my knees it became an “around the house over pyjamas” cardigan. I thought it was because it was made with a fairly large hook, but I recently made my second cardigan with a much smaller hook and it has dropped terribly too. I need to move the buttons now so it doesn’t fall off my shoulders. I’m very disappointed. Any ideas on how I could stop this happening? Do I maybe need to block the garments once they’re finished? I really want to make more items to wear, but it seems like such a waste of time and effort if it only fits properly for a day ๐Ÿ™

I make items for a charity and I get so caught up in it that I don’t make anything for myself !! This fall, though, I made up my mind to start knitting and crocheting things for me too !!

Now that I live in Guam where it is 85 degrees F. everyday, I need to find more patterns for the hotter weather. I love the look of the tanks now that have a crocheted racer back and when my yarn arrives from the movers that will be my first project!
I also love all my tote bags and since I walk the dogs everyday my keychain is crocheted with a poop bag holder. I crocheted leashes, but they stretch so much, not sure if they would be strong enough for my two 60 lb dogs!

  26. Anastasia says:

I usually just crochet for others (gifts and such) but in south Florida I dont get that many chances to wear hats and scarves (which I Love!) so I’m starting to make myself a ton of headbands since it’s summer year round ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Jumasto says:

Anastasia: You could use lightweight cotton yarn to make some openweave scarves and sunhats. The scarves will help keep your neck cool, and of course the hats are always good in a sunny warm area.

  28. Verity says:

I used to wear my crocheted shawl at work everyday in the spring/fall/winter, until this summer when I accidentally put a hole in it: and it was getting so worn that it wasn’t worth trying to salvage. I’m in the process of getting yarn to replace it though! Right now I have a “security blanket” made when I was on sick leave this spring: between my cat and myself it’s being used constantly!

  29. Varsha says:

I too am a crochet addict.i discovered that if I made items in 2categories of smaller ones like doilies, caps, hats evening bags and larger projects like stoles, baby blankets,table-cloth edgings then i do use the smaller ones more often and the larger ones on special occasions. In fact I have also made a Indian sari border of 9yards which I use often and a blouse too to match.the sari blouse is short and fits snuggly as one sees in Bollywood song sequences.yes I love to use my crocheted stuff as many times I can!
