For the border, you can single crochet in each of the stitches evenly around the blanket, just be sure to put 3 stitches in each corner, so that the corners won’t bunch up.

I normally use acrylic, just because they are easy to care for (you can toss them in the washing machine) and they are fairly cheap compared to other yarns. However, you can feel the texture of different yarns and look at their labels for care instructions to see which one you like best.

I haven’t written a pattern for that blanket, but I can tell you how to make it! The blanket is made with shell stitches. If you aren’t familiar with shell stitiches, you basically make several double crochets in one crochet stitch to make a curved shell shape. For the blanket you would repeat shell stitches on one row and on the next row you would do shell stitches but place then in between the previous row’s shell stitches.

Maybe I will write up a pattern for this blanket and that will make it more clear!
