Benbel, it would depend on the tension you are trying to achieve in your work. But for a rule of thumb, here's a table in this post that might help you decide what to use: Types of Yarn and Recommended Crochet Hooks and Gauges These days, the yarn label will often tell you what hook size it recommends using as well. If you're using a pattern, it should suggest a hook size too.

Though not a big fan of the treble crochet stitch, this pattern will be used for a lightweight/Spring scarf for a friend. And yes, light cotton will be perfect. Thanks for sharing.
