Interested in an Oscar Mystery CAL?

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 29 Comments

Hey, everyone! The Golden Globes have passed, and the Oscar nominees have recently been announced. What do you think of the choices? In order to celebrate the Awards Season, I thought we could do a really fun, quick crochet along.

It will work kind of like a drinking game during the Oscars, except we will be determining the pattern based upon who wins in several of the categories. Drinking is optional. 🙂 Read on for more details!

Join the Crochet Spot Oscars Mystery CAL with Caissa McClinton @artlikebread @crochetspot

The Materials You will need a few hundred yards of yarn you love & a hook that works well with your yarn. There are no size requirements for hook or yarn, but if you want to be done quickly, use a chunky yarn and large hook! There are also no color requirements, so you can be free to use what you have on hand or buy special yarn just for the CAL. A tape measure will also be helpful.

The Project We will be making a cowl… Or rather, YOU will be making one of four versions of a cowl. Your specific pattern will be determined by the winners of certain categories in the Oscars.

The Pattern I have chosen several different stitch patterns with tutorials that appear on Crochet Spot. They will be combined in different ways depending upon what happens during the Oscar ceremony. Each participant will have a form (kind of based on a bingo card) that will be randomly assigned to the participant based upon his or her first name. After the ceremony, I’ll post the winners in our categories so that participants can still complete the cowl if they didn’t see the broadcast.

The Awards There are three awards in this CAL, Nominee, Best Supporting Crocheter, and Best Crocheter.

Nominee Each and every participant will receive a digital badge that you can post on your blog, website, Ravelry account, or social media to share with the world that you finished the CAL! It will be beautiful!

Best Supporting Crocheter One crocheter (chosen at random) will receive a specialized digital badge AND a FREE Crochet Spot Pattern or a free month of membership if the winner is currently a subscriber.

Best Crocheter One crocheter (chosen at random) will receive a specialized digital badge AND a FREE Crochet Spot Pattern or a free month of membership if the winner is currently a subscriber AND a yarn prize (to be determined – I’ll let ya know!)

To Enter You’ll need to send in a picture to Rachel by the due date (in a few weeks).

So what do you think? Are you in for this challenge? I really want you to participate if you have interest. It will be fun, but remember that you don’t have to watch the ceremony to participate. Do you have any questions? Please leave your thoughts, ideas and questions in the comment section below. Let’s have fun & do this!!!

This sounds awesome! Will there be a certain amount of repeats or a certain number of winners that have to be used to qualify for the finished object?

What do you consider a “few” hundred yards? I bought a hank of beautiful hand dyed wool sock weight yarn while in Scotland last summer and was trying to decide what I wanted to make with it and this sounds very interesting and fun. The hank has about 400 yards.

I’d like to join, but it kind of depends on how long time we have. Since I’m in Sweden I won’t watch the Oscars, it’s in the middle of the night here.

Count me in. I have plenty of year in the stash.. well, everything is either sock or #4 worsted. Maybe a trip to the yarn store will be. In order. Here in Texas, we have about two weeks a year cold enough to wear scarves, hat, or gloves unless you have an outside job. End of January is coming in with three days in. The seventies.

Even each real Oscar nominee gets a swag bag to take home. How about drawing the names of 10 (or more) nominees to win one of 3 free patterns (chosen by you) as an incentive. It could be something as small as an applique. Some of us do not have a blog or website to post the digital badge on and there may be a few men who participate. This is a popular blog.

    • Cami says:

Hi, fleurdelis! Thank you for your suggestions! I think we’ll keep the prizes for this as posted, but we’ll consider the suggested prize structure for the future. Rachel is donating patterns as prizes and there are a lot of free patterns on the site. The nominee badge is special and I personally digitally crafted it. Once it is revealed – no one has seen it yet except me-, I will explain its origin and hopefully it will be evident that it is no more gender-specific than an actual Oscar. I hope people will like it. It is suitable to be printed and framed. You can also post it on Facebook. Or people can just enjoy the Oscar patterns and not use the badge. Again, thanks for your good suggestion.

I have practiced the foundation chain for Option A in the round and am ready to practice some of the special stitches that I am not familiar with. You and Rachel are great cheer Leaders! Thanks for responding.
