It’s safe to say that a lot of traditional crochet stitches translate over to Tunisian crochet. Bobble stitches can make nice accents with either technique.

A picture I ran across the other day while looking for some color inspiration showed about 10 or more hot air balloons of all different colors and patterns speckling a European horizon. It was lovely against the pale blue sky and tan terrain. Some were striped in multi-colors, like the one I have designed for you, others had fewer colors and varied stripes or different patterns all together. For this applique I used five different colors and swapped them every two rows. Have fun making this simple and easy applique!

Have you heard of Margaret Hubert? If not, it would be my pleasure to introduce you to one of crochet’s most prolific designers. Margaret Hubert is the author of more than 20 crochet and knitting books. She has been involved in the needle arts industry for years and has been instrumental in developing new generations of crocheters. In 2012 she was inducted into the Jean Leinhauser Crochet Hall of Fame.

We’re lucky to be able to offer a copy of her latest book, Customize Your Crochet, as a prize in our Finish in ’15 contest.

Torchy Blane is a fictional character from the 30’s that inspired the Lois Lane character for Superman. Both are avid newspaperwomen who will stop at nothing to get a story. Glenda Farrell plays Torchy Blane in a few of the films of that time, and in it she wears a hat that has, for me, become the symbol of a woman of the press. With this pattern I have sought to replicate that style, complete with an upturned brim and hat band in the form of a long ribbon. All you need to know to crochet this hat are the basics. One thing I love about being a fiber artist is the variety of events that are held year round. I have been fortunate enough to go to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival twice, but since then, I had gone a few years between shows. Luckily, I found out that there’s a sheep and fiber festival held not far away from home, and I made plans to go. I even took along my nieces who, though they have had trouble learning, are at least interested in fiber arts.

Who wouldn’t be interested in something so pretty?

Have you ever taken a ride in a hot air balloon? I did once when I was young, but then the very next to ride after me had the ride of their lives as the balloon broke loose and took them miles away. Of course, the pilot was experienced and no one was ever in any danger. All was recovered, but needless to say, the fun was over for the day. Hot air balloons have always been a symbol of adventure. Why not use hot air balloons for the adventurous person in your life? Use them on a gift, to decorate for a party, or whatever else you can think of. This applique works up very quickly and is a lot of fun!
