Twinkie Chan’s Crocheted Paintings

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 9 Comments

Hey, Crochet Spotters! Today I am excited to introduce you to one of my favorite crocheters and designers, Twinkie Chan! Twinkie Chan is a celebrated crochet designer who has created her niche by crocheting all things delicious and wearable! If you see someone wearing a pizza scarf, it’s most likely her design.

I’ve been following Twinkie since 2010 and I’ve learned that there are many exciting aspects to her career. She has been a successful seller on eBay, Etsy, and at craft fairs. She’s authored a popular pattern book and has another one in the works. She did a series of patterns for Michael’s and is currently featured on the website as a “Celebrity Crafter.” No doubt, all of this success is due to talent, focus, a lot of hard work.

One of the things I most admire about her is her focus within a well-defined niche. She’s really intent on creating adorable, food-related, crocheted wearables and items for adults. While that may perhaps sound somewhat limiting, it’s amazing to see how creative she gets within that category. One of the more surprising and certainly delightful works she has shared on her blog is a crocheted painting.

Crocheted Paintings? They are crocheted artwork, mounted on painting canvases. When you think about it, the idea makes sense, right? I know I get a really creative surge sometimes when I’m playing with hooks and yarn. Why not use that creativity to riff on the traditional wall hanging? It’s artwork you can touch!

This looks like artwork I’d like to eat as well!

While the idea of crocheted paintings is not necessarily a new one, I think that Twinkie’s fresh perspective and flawless excecution is always inspiring. Over the last few years she has had a few blog posts explaining particular paintings, some with sketches and progress pictures. It is fascinating when an artist shares her process, and reading Twinkie’s blog always feels like a celebration.

For instance, you can see this veggified bunny sketch…

Hello. Enjoyed your piece on Twinkie Chan very much. Her paintings are so cute – and I just had a light bulb go off in my head!! I have tons of my kids and grandkids pictures that they made in school. These pictures would be great to re-create in crochet. I am off to go through their school stuff and pick a drawing that is my favorite from each one. What a surprise for them when they see their artwork on the wall in crochet!! Better get going……….
