Why is Crocheting So Much Fun?

By Rachel Choi – 14 Comments

I don’t know about you, but I have a blast when I pick up my yarn and hook to crochet! Below are some of my reasons for why I think crocheting is so much fun. Feel free to share your reasons, by leaving a comment!

Crocheting is so much fun because…

  • I can turn an ordinary ball of yarn into something useful, like a hat, slipper, blanket or toy.
  • It’s like being in a secret club. We talk in crochet code.
  • I can make cute things that make me go, “Awww…”
  • I can gather with crochet friends and crochet the day away.
  • Crocheting relieves stress, especially from work or nagging family members.
  • I love teaching, especially when it’s about how to crochet.
  • When I’m done a project, I get the feeling of accomplishment, the best feeling of all.
  • It allows me to meet new people, who also are crazy about crochet.
  • There’s nothing better than the happy face of the person I gift my crochet item to… as long as they like it.

… all of the above and crocheting reminds me of my grandmother, who taught me!
    Such a useful skill!

It’s fun for me for all the same reasons. Also, I like crocheting in public and getting a mixture of looks from a knowing smirk to intense interest to awww that’s cute to “wtf, you’re too young to crochet!”
When my mom had her hysterectomy last month when we visited her she was still a little out of it from the anesthesia and morphine so I brought one of my projects to pass the time since there wouldn’t be a lot of conversation. One of the nurses gushed over the baby blanket I was making. Then last week I brought her to one of her follow-up appointments and crocheted in the waiting room while waiting for her and another patient came in halfway through and just smiled at me. I’m surprised she didn’t strike up a conversation. A lot of older people are surprised but happy that younger generations are taking up crafting and keeping it going, updating it and giving it a new flair. I was all ready to explain amigurumi to her if she asked what I was making but it never happened LOL. I guess that also makes me happy, that I can say I’m keeping a generations-old skill alive and making it modern as well.

I think it´s a blast because I can always feel productive, creative, and possibly entreprenurial or charitable at the same time. Can´t beat that! Also, yarn obsession- enough said.

Crocheting is fun for me because:
    1. I love to create patterns to share with others,
    2. I love helping people learn how to crochet, and
    3. It feels good to help others decipher pattern language.

I like crocheting because it is my little escape from everything that is happening in the world around me.

  6. Amy says:

I love that I can be creative (when my job isn’t allowing me to) and produce something beautiful and useful for myself and by myself. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve learned to do in a long time 🙂

Crocheting is fun to me for the same reasons as you have listed. Also, I notice the repetitive stitching is very meditative and calming, especially if life gets chaotic – the stitches stay calm: “double crochet, chain 1, double crochet, chain 1…”

Also, I had read somewhere that crocheting is one of the few activities that uses all parts of our brain. So if this is true, we are also getting a good brain workout while our fingers fly.

I love crocheting for so many reasons: it’s a great stress relief, I generally like all things crafty, I love making something cute, cool, or different, and those are only a bit of why I like crocheting. My all time favorite thing I have to say is Amigurumi. I just learned how to make the cute, little stuffed guys but, think I’m addicted! 🙂

It keeps me from eating while I watch TV. Was really helpful during the Olympics!

    D) All of the above! Stress reduction, creative, productive, etc…
I totally agree with Heather about boredom snacking! I also did a lot of crocheting during the Olympics, sans a few performances that required my full attention.

I love your webpage. I think it is the best crochet site I have ever been on. Thank you so much for the free patterns. Your patterns are easy to understand. I am a 57 year old grandmother but I like to keep up with the latest patterns and you certainly have them. I am so glad I found your website. Crochet is a relaxation technique for me. It makes me happy to be able to give someone something that is handmade. I don’t sell any of my projects, because I would rather give them to someone that can use them. Thank you so much for all your patterns.

I share the same reasons, especially that we are a secret club, who speak in secret language, and only we know the joy that we share about our crocheting.

I love crocheting for I can make things that are cherished, my parents told me that I am an awesome person, for if there were a zombie apocalypse than I could crochet them blankets, hats, clothing items, etc. I love that the craft has so much artistic value and that it has a lot of love pouring out into every crochet loop of every item. I value the craft as a way to communicate my love and as a way to have something which someone can cherish from me and made by me as a gift. I think that crocheting items and giving them is way better than giving store bought items, for there is so much positive emotions that go into the making of every item and the joy that fills your heart to the brim when the item is loved… I have made two doilies and I smile when I see them on the dining room table, as an expression of art and of love. I am crocheting a big blanket right now and it will be passed on to future generations, and yes to see yarn turn into a lifelong treasure is the most mesmerizing part of being a human, I find it fascinating that I can make something, sometimes I look at the item I make in utter disbelief and think “Did I really make that?” for all handmade things are unique and they are one of a kind. made with love from the bottom of my heart.
