Granny Square Dress on the Red Carpet

By Rachel Choi – 19 Comments

So you thought granny squares where just for blankets? Yea, right. Cate Blanchett, an actress you may recognize from hit movies such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hot Fuzz and The Lord of the Rings, was photographed on the red carpet wearing a crocheted granny square dress!

Although the dress is definitely not my style, I do enjoy seeing crocheted fashioned. The granny squares are nicely colored and give a nice contrast with the black outlining. The dress is made of several granny squares and is bordered by ruffles. And before you ask, I do NOT have the pattern to make this awesome dress. But I do have the granny square crochet pattern: How to Crochet A Granny Square.

I love that! I’ve always liked her. She seems more “down to Earth” compared to most other big name actresses.

That is a FUN dress!! I really like it. Ruffles are in, huge this fall. So that is a “now” dress. Would have been even cuter had the bottom cut-off granny squares been omitted and the ruffles moved up.

I just blogged about this dress and You and your site. 😀

Oh I like Granny Squares, but that dress is awful! I have seen better looking granny squares dresses. I’m sorry, but IMO that dress brings down the crochet fashion concept. I would add this to my “What were they thinking?” list!

Hmmm…looking at this dress is giving me ideas. I think I’ll try to create a dress for myself using granny squares. Thanks for the motivation.

I think I would have used a better color pattern for a dress that was going down the red carpet!

I think it would be really nice if done in size 30 thread; sport weight might be ok but regular weight yarn is too bulky for my taste. Hummmmmmmmm, I need to dig out my granny square vest.

  8. Nancy Reffle says:

I would be so embarrassed to claim that as my design as a dress! She looks like she grabbed the afghan off the family room floor as she walked out the door!

Bravo, she make proud to be a crocheter. when I look at a pattern, I don’t see the negativity, I see the work and the imagination and the love in the work, you can always use ideas.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

I think it’d look better made of smaller granny squares. I really think an afghan was cut up for this dress. The black ruffles are a sweet addition.

    Ummm, ermmmm…

Cate Blanchett is a bold and talented woman who can get away with bold clothing choices. This IS bold and she looks great anyway.

I agree that I might have suggested a different color palette and smaller squares.

Wouldn’t it be smashing in ombre’ -ed reds or blues or purples? Each square a different arrangement of hues (from light to dark, I mean) but all the same color? Hmmm….

  13. […] you remember a while back I posted about the Granny Square Dress on the Red Carpet. That’s the crocheted dress on the right hand side. I though it was a neat and bold dress. […]

I agree with an earlier comment…awful. If it was done in a solid color or maybe a bit of sparkle but no, it looks like an afghan!

    Hahaha! She is great!

  16. Littece says:

From a crocheter who loves granny squares: HORRORS! The colors are reminiscent of a nasty 70s afghan done in scrap yarn. On the positive side? I would definitely make this dress but with LusterSheen yarn and in a fab color combination that would be stunning. BUT: Cate can certainly look fab in almost anything she would put on- my, she’s brave- LOL.

What was Kate thinking? I know she is a bit anti-establishment but this was a bit too, too…well I’m lost for words.

For the next couple of years the pattern was available at a chain store in Australia. The shaped squares were achieved by cutting full squares into shape required after stitching them all together, and just like steeking in knitting, sewing a line of machine sewing along cutting lines then taking your scissors to them.
