How to Add Fringe or Tassels Using a Crochet Hook

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – 5 Comments
Adding tassels or fringe to crocheted creations can transform them from ordinary to unique. Tassels can also be added to knitted items, or even cloth (just make sure to make perforations neatly and evenly). They are a popular addition to scarves and wraps.
Did you know that one of the easiest ways to attach fringe or tassels to craftwork is by using a crochet hook? This step-by-step tutorial shows you how exactly to do that.

Mousing over the images shows the photos for the left-handed tutorial.
Decide how long and how thick you would want your fringe to be. Keep in mind that the thickness of your yarn plays a role in how the tassels will look.
Cut up lengths of yarn–they should be about twice as long as your intended tassel, plus a half-inch allowance or more. If you’re unsure, it’s better to err on the safe side and cut longer pieces (you can always snip off the extra length later). Bunched together, the pieces of yarn should be half as thick as your intended tassel.
Gather the lengths of yarn together and fold them in half.

Insert hook into stitch or space where you want to place the tassel or fringe.

Insert your hook into the middle of the folded-up lengths of yarn (like you would do to a loop when crocheting).

Pull up all the pieces of yarn through the stitch or space.

At this point we’ll be making something like a chain, but a whole lot thicker! Wrap the other side of the yarn pieces around your hook and pull everything through the loop.

One tassel made! Make it neater by pulling on the ends of the fringe and making sure the knot looks even and neat.

Make it even neater by making sure that the strands of yarn are all equal in length (much like a haircutter would do). Run the yarn through your fingers and cut off any and all excess yarn.
I hope that was helpful! If you need more help, just leave a comment below.

    Hi there,

Love your site by the way. I have added some fringe ( tassels) to a scarf I crocheted and the yarn is fraying. Is there a way to keep that from happening.

    Thank you.
