Free Crochet Pattern: Sweater Mug Cozies

By Amy Yarbrough – 2 Comments

How are you about sweaters? I love them! So I was completely sold on the idea of making simple sweater cozies for your mugs. After all, what could be more perfect than a ribbed sweater pattern or two on your mug of hot drink?

There are two sweater cozies to choose from, (or make them both!), a lovely red with bold ribbing and subtle side ribbing, and a warming green with defined lines and a firm reverse single crochet border. Each cozy is finished off with a rustic button.

Since mugs seem to vary in size I have added instructions for changing the size. It is easy!

Skill Level:

Finished Size: Fits large mugs (about 16oz), size adjustments included

Materials:
Medium weight yarn (approximately 45 yards per cozy)
Crochet hook I (5.50 mm) and H (5.00 mm)
Button
Needle and thread
crochet yarn size 4

Gauge:
With I hook,
7 sc = 2’’
7 rows = 2’’
Gauge Swatch: 2’’w x 2’’h (5 cm x 5 cm) ch 8.
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 7 sc
Row 2 – 7: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 7 sc
Finish off.

How to Crochet Half Double Crochet in third Loop: for this pattern, hdc are worked in the third loop. Not the front loop, or the back loop, but the third loop behind the stitch.

Crochet Pattern: Sweater Mug Cozies

Cozy #1 (Red pictured)
Row 1: with crochet hook I, ch 15, sc in second ch from hook and in next 2 ch, hdc in next 8 ch, sc in last 3 ch: 14 sts
Row 2 – 28: ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in last 3 sts: 14 sts
Ch 12, sl st in first sc, sl st in each st across, ch 1, sl st in bottom st of row 1, sl st in each st across row 1, finish off.

Sew on button on opposite side of ch-12 loop.

To change the size of Cozy #1 work fewer or more chains in the foundation. Subtract or add from the center (row 2 – 28) so that you continue to work 3 sc on both ends for a better sweater pattern. Also work fewer or more rows to fit mug.

Row 1: with crochet hook I, ch 12, sc in each sc across: 11 sc
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 11 sc
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in next 2 sc, * dc around post of sc 2 rows down, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * across: 11 sts

Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc in next 2 sc, * dc around post of sc 2 rows down, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * across: 11 sts
Row 6 – 41: repeat Rows 4 and 5
With H hook, ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across, ch 12, sl st in same st, turn, reverse sc across side, sc in each st across, ch 3, sl st in bottom of row 1, turn, reverse sc across last side, sl st in first st, finish off.

To change the size of Cozy #2 work 3 less or 3 more chains in the foundation and fewer or more rows.
