How to Crochet: Half Double Crochet Decrease

By Rachel Choi – 21 Comments

Decrease are different depending on the stitch are you working with. If you are working with single crochets, you may want to make a single crochet decrease, or if you are using double crochet you may want to do a double crochet decrease. This tutorial will show you how to do a decrease for half double crochet (hdc) stitches. To do a half double crochet decrease, you must do the the following: (yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop) 2 times, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on hook.

Below are step by step pictures for the instructions. This tutorial is for both right and left handed people. For left handed pictures, roll your mouse over the image and it will change for you.

Step 1: Starting with a small piece of work to practice on, yarn over.

Step 2: Insert hook into next stitch.

Step 3: Yarn over.

Step 4: Pull up a loop.

Step 5: Yarn over.

Step 6: Insert hook into next stitch.

Step 7: Yarn over.

Step 8: Pull up a loop.

Note: If you are working the decrease over more than 2 stitches, repeat steps 5 – 8 until the required number of stitches is worked. Then continue with steps 9 – 10.

Step 9: Yarn over.

Step 10: Pull through all 5 loops on hook.
Note: if you worked the decrease over more than 2 stitches, then you’ll have 1 more loop on your hook for each additional stitch worked. Be sure to pull through all loops on hook.

Congrats! You just complete 1 half double crochet decrease!

this is funny, I just got a crochet book thats -I think- one of the most complete instructional books, the only down side is that it doesn’t show how to decrease any of the stitches, so here I am look at your web page and the first one I see is How to drecrease a HDC. Thanks for all of your wonderful tutorials.

    Hello,
Hi There, I am trying to do snow kissed slippers and have come across a row that I don’t totally understand, it reads hdc in next 10 sts, which I understand, then it reads (hdc dec in next 2 sts) 2 times hdc in next 11 sts, ch 2 turn. I don’t totally understand the stuff in brackets.
The following part is what I don’t understand (hdc dec in next 2 sts) 2 times, I am not sure what the 2 times means???
If someone can explain a little I would greatly appreciate. I am just about done the one slippers.

  14. Michele says:

Hello Rachel, Thanks for your answer, but I am still confused. So with the way it is written, does it mean that you will end up with 4 hdc Dec.,because it says (hdc Dec in next 2 sts) 2 times.
    Thanks
    Michele

How do I decrease just one stitch. My pattern says Dec one stich on each end..

    • Rachel Choi says:

Hi Katie! If you are using hdc stitches, then you would make the decrease just like it shows in this tutorial. When you crochet the two stitches together, like this tutorial shows, you are decreasing by 1 stitch.
