| There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! Inspired by a traditional crocheted granny square, this coaster and trivet set is crocheted in the round with an openwork stitch pattern. The top layer of each piece resembles a round granny, while the back is a solid piece. Feel free to crochet the coasters and trivets in as many colors as desired to create a look that you like! The pieces in the sample photo use 3 different colors (light blue, dark blue, and red) for the front pieces, and black for the back pieces.

There’s no such thing as too much love, right? So there must not be any such thing as too many hearts. This little open heart is a quick project, and would look great linked in a chain of hearts, used as a charm, or used as an applique. Your creativity is the limit! |

| When trudging through the jungle or nearing rocky cliffs, its always a good idea to take along a rope ladder in case you have to do some climbing. Or then again, you could make a miniature for an adventurous boy in your life. Perfect for 4 to 4 1/2 inch army men, any boy (and maybe some girls too) would love it! |

On July 25, there will only be 153 crafting days before Christmas! Does that number make your crafty fingers itch? If not, try this: on the same day, there will only be 125 days before Hanukkah! How did 2013 become a year when Haunukah comes so early?
When it’s broken down that way, by days, I do feel a little panicked. I am old enough to know that we bring magic to the holiday season, and furthermore, that magic takes planning! I hate to admit this, but I usually intend to make many more gifts than I ever get around to making! Especially last year, I actually ended up buying a bunch of gifts. There’s nothing wrong with buying gifts, but as a crocheter, I LOVE making gifts, and I want to spread the handmade love to everyone I care about.
I had to come up with a solution for myself, so maybe you’d like to join me and make this a Crochet Spot community effort! Let’s start our holiday crafting now by following these steps!

| There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! This pattern is similar to the original Flower Pillow Cover, but decorates the pillow cover with 3 different sized flowers. Each flower is crocheted separately, then sewn onto the pillow cover. Feel free to crochet as many flowers in as many colors as you like to create a unique look. You can use it to cover an old pillow that needs a new look, or a pillow insert. The cover has one open end that is fastened closed with 6 small buttons. The buttons are designed to be on the inside of the pillow so they’re hidden and the cover appears seamless.

Made to go in a purse, this makeup case holds a few essentials, like mascara and lipstick, separate from the rest of the items in your bag for when you want them to be easy to find. It’s made all in one piece with a lengthwise slit and a button closure. |

| Ever used the lace stitch? Its not just for delicate patterns. Here I used it for this miniature net and it worked out perfect. Made for 4 to 4 1/2 inch army men, boys will love to add it to their other military equipment. Its quick and easy to make! Tip: For a thinner netting you could try a smaller size thread. |

Have you ever noticed that while double crocheting in rows, you need to “chain 3” before starting the next row? Have you ever wondered what this is called and why you need to do this?
Well, the chains at the end of the rows are called “turning chains,” abbreviated tch. They exist because they allow your crochet room to grow evenly. Later we are going to see what it looks like and feels like if you try to work back and forth without turning chains. As you can imagine, it gets pretty cramped and a little wonky!
Photo below shows a double crochet swatch with no turning chains!

| There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! Crocheted lengthwise and in the round with lots of drape, the Allure Lace Scarf is a great choice for summertime accessorizing and taking the chill out of summer evenings. The nature of the fabric gives it a slight ruffle effect that, along with its peaked design, makes a playful statement over a sundress or cool summer blouse. Self-striping yarns and bright solids are sure to help you make a splash. |

| This is a simple way to crochet leaves for any of your projects. It only takes a moment to make so no telling how many you could make in thirty minutes! Use them for garland, a scarf, adorn a basket with them or put them on a blanket. For a delicate leaf on a delicate project substitute yarn for thread. Don’t hesitate to try something new! And when you do be sure to let me know! |
