It’s a funny question to ask, because we’re all here because we love crochet, right? But think about it – there are oodles of crafts out there. Why do YOU choose to crochet? I am imagining a few reasons why, but I really want to hear from you!

Personally, I choose to crochet for four main reasons:

1. I am creating fabric! As the daughter of a textile-obsessed artist, the idea that I could actually make fabric is what got me to learn crochet!

2. There are so many stitches and techniques to explore! I know with certainty that I will be forever happy because the opportunities for creative exploration in this craft will never end.

3. It’s not so hard to start. I’m not going to say it’s easy, because I remember my beginning days, but honestly, it wasn’t so bad. It’s a pretty kind craft in that way. 🙂

4. I am making useful stuff! I don’t know about you, but I lose motivation when I am making something that’s meant to be only a “decoration.” Don’t get me wrong, I love adornment, but after a while, we crocheters accumulate finished items because we’re always crocheting! It makes me happy to know that someone will *use* the item I am making.

This is a nice, thick, coaster with a ruffle for a more feminine touch. The center is nice and flat so you can sit your glass on it without worrying about ruining the ruffle effect. It is easy to make, and you can work up a whole set in a flash. Have fun with this pattern, and be sure to make a bunch in different colors!

Hats are one of my favorite accessories – they help me express my mood on any particular day. If it’s super cold, it’s the “furry, no-named animal” hat that says I’m feeling “a little wild” today. My bulky yarn rolled brim says “I’m feeling preppy!” Then there’s my flat top, large flowered, multi-colored, multi-fiber yarn that states that I’m feeling artistic and love color! And there’s always the “Bad Hair Day Beanie” that I can just throw on and head out the door without spending an hour getting to know my curling iron better.

There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! This crochet pattern is exactly like my original Hooded Scarf crochet pattern, with the only difference being that this hood is curved and NOT pointed in the back. For folks who aren’t a fan of the point on the back of many hooded scarves, this pattern is for you! The hooded scarf features deep pockets on both sides and a ribbed edging along the front. The scarf and hood are designed to be wide and large to keep you extra warm during the winter.

Finland is a northern land and it was always important to have warm clothing here. But in contrast to other northern countries, where the main technique to make clothes from wool was knitting, Finland is distinguished for its beautiful multicolored crocheted handicrafts.

The mittens that I made are inspired by the old mittens from the Ostrobothnian Museum’s collection, which are at least one hundred years old. I adapted the original pattern to a thicker yarn, shaped the mittens in my own way and added a chain-loop fringe edging. It may be interesting to know that the original mittens have 128 stitches in one round! There is also a more modern version of the same mittens – these have 64 stitches in one round. I reduced that number to 48.

The colors in the original mittens are red, green and white – red leaves and green border on a white background. The color combination that I have used is naturally white leaves and dark green border on a gray-green background. Feel free to use the colors that you like!

The most difficult part in this project is, in my opinion, to obtain the same gauge all the way through. So try to be aware of that from the beginning.
