5 Ways to Find Your Crochet Time

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 7 Comments

Since you are reading about crochet, you’ve got to be a crochet enthusiast. Even though crochet is quick and requires relatively few supplies to get started, even the most obsessed crocheter may not be able to find the time to crochet. In fact, I kind of feel that way myself right now. As the seasons are changing and schedules change, we are gearing up for the holidays and making all kinds of plans. There is much organize and to be organized, and besides my dear dogs are begging me for more and more attention. Where can I find the time to crochet!!!???

I am extremely good at giving advice, so if I were advising my friend, I would give her these options:

1) Crochet bit by bit throughout the day. This will take a little bit of planning, but it will still be fun! Firstly, choose a pattern that you love, print it, and put it into a page protector. The reason being that there will be no delay in finding it on your mobile device! Then pack your crochet bag and get going. Find little patches (10- to 15-minute blocks) of time during the day to crochet. The trick is finding the time and sticking to it.

Some good times might be

– right after you wake up in the morning, but before you start your morning routine
– during the morning or afternoon commute (if you’re not driving)
– before you begin your work day, during your lunch break, or right after work
– right after dinner but before you do the dishes
– during your favorite TV program
– right before you go to bed
– in the car after you arrive to your destination, but before you go in

Using this method, take just 10 minutes each day to make progress on your project. Little by little and bit by bit, you’ll get it done.

2) Join a CAL. Woohoo!! Like over a hundred Crochet Spot fans, get motivated by having fun with fellow crochet enthusiasts and join a crochet along. This is great because we can motivate each other by giving encouraging comments and sharing pictures. It is really fun to see how the same pattern can look so different with everyone’s color and yarn choices (and of course their careful handiwork.) Sometimes people make modifications that can be really fun and inspirational!

3) Join a Swap. This is a good one because there is a deadline! A swap also focuses your yarn crafting to figuring out something the other person will like and need but also something that you can make! Since your partner will also be making you something, it is fun to go through the process together. The best swaps share pictures so the whole group can see your hard work!

4) Join a Crafting Group. Crafting groups that meet regularly can be a great motivation for getting your crochet on. They provide a specified time and also a group of like-minded individuals. Just make sure you actually crochet and don’t spend all of your time gabbing!!

5) Schedule “Me Time.” Yes, it’s easier said than done, but even just half an hour of “me time” a week can be a life saver. At the beginning of your week, find a half-hour block where you can make an appointment with yourself and plan to use that time to crochet, uninterrupted. Get yourself away from the house and away from work. Find a sanctuary like the local library, a cafe, or a favorite park where you can just retreat into the crochet. Set an alarm in your calendar to remind you to take this time and not to blow it off! Crochet is important!

Now that I have laid out five ways to find more crochet time, I hope I will use my own advice! Crafters need to create. Reading about crochet is not enough!

Break out the hooks and let me know how you’ve found crochet time in your life. Leave tips in the comments, or tell me your crochet-time plan for the next week! ๐Ÿ™‚

I use my crochet time as a reward for getting chores and such done. I hate housecleaning, but I will hurry and clean all three bathrooms if I know I’ll have a good 30min of uninterrupted crochet time afterwards. ๐Ÿ™‚

I work full time and have a toddler, so I know how difficult it can be to find time. I try and sneak in some kn*t or crochet time after she goes to bed as least a few nights a week. Bath time (for her) is also an excellent time – I don’t have to worry about where she is; I craft while she gets clean.

Courtney, those funny looks you are getting are probably looks of envy!! So keep on crocheting. I always have some project in my van ,,, if I wind up with an extended wait time for some sort of service this is an ideal way to pass the time. Everyone is so stretched these days,, crochet or whatever your needlework passion gives you a much needed block of time to re-establish the mind-body connection,,,, its also, a wonderful addiction SMILE

I love to do mile a minute afghans. I usually have one on the go. I keep the strip I am working on in a seperate bag … when it is time to head out in the car …just grab the bag and away we go… it is only a few minutes to town but every few minutes sure add up … the mile a minute is a very apt title… easy to do … and makes a great afghan … or laprob or baby cover.

I always have a project packed; for medical appointments, traveling with my Honey-do during his driving period, long trips by airplane, etc. I am making a scrap yarn granny bed cover and have it in the kitchen so that whenever I have a moment , I can work on it. It’s surprising how much one can do, especially if it does not require reading instructions frequently.

  6. Oh, I have time to crochet from morning to evening รขโ‚ฌโ€œ I’m in pension, it’s a happy state!
