3 Ways to Use Crocheted Twirls

Posted in Tutorials and Help on April 17th, 2011 by A Guest Writer – 22 Comments

Twirls are a simple crochet construction. They can be quick to make and can be used in a variety of different ways.

  • As a decoration: in white, twirls can represent icicles which can be used for seasonal decorating. Made with green yarn, twirls easily stand in for foliage and fronds.
  • As a scarf: worked with mohair or a similar textured yarn, just 3 – 4 rounds result in a fantastically light weight scarf, adding lots of flair to any winter outfit.
  • As a bag strap: when made with double knit/worsted yarn, twirls are a stylish way to add straps to a bag.

But first let me take you through twirl-making, so that you can get crocheting wonderful twirls in all lengths and widths to use in any of the ways suggested above. So, if you’re in the mood to try out some twirls, grab yourself a hook and some yarn and twirl through the following steps:

So the time has come, your grandma or mum is aging. You can see her once all seeing eyes deteriorating, her beautiful hands that she nursed and hugged you with getting less agile with age. Everything she ever made you is more precious than it has ever been. What happens now? Well you keep using it of course, that is why she made it for you. When she passes you will have lovely memories around you.

So you’ve found the perfect pattern, you’ve found the perfect yarn. You have done your swatch and all is right with the world. Off you go, obeying all the instructions, counting stitches and counting rows. It looks kind of right, maybe a bit wobbly, but you are doing it by the pattern so all will be good in the end.

The Stuff You Can’t Afford – But Why Can’t You?

We’ve all done it………. Gone to the magic store that sells all the wools, yarns and threads and stood there drooling over the expensive yet impractical yarns. You know the ones. The ones that cost a week’s worth of milk and bread for one ball, the ones with ‘hand spun’ and ‘hand dyed’ printed on the gold plated label (well, maybe not gold plated but it should be). You have no idea what you’d do with this stuff but you want it so bad – just one cuddle won’t hurt will it? Then you’re off to the sale section and the budget yarns.

Boy Oh Boy! What to crochet for a boy? All I know is, if I am going to spend all that time crocheting a sweater for my son, I want him to LOVE it, not just tolerate it. And I want the design to capture all the qualities that make having him around fun.

The New Trend in Round Baby Afghans

I have to admit, when I first saw a pattern for a round baby blanket, I thought to myself, WHY??? A round baby blanket?? That is different. Well, I was right!!! They are different, and in an awesome way!!!

Round baby afghans are the perfect size and style to cover a car seat or an infant carrier. They are also easier for the baby to snuggle with. As an added treat, they are amazing for taking baby photos. The round afghan drapes under the baby in a perfect shape to compliment the picture.
