Burn 500 Calories by Crocheting?!

By Rachel Choi – 13 Comments
I recently came across an article on MSN discussing 50 ways to cut 500 calories a day. There are some fun tips and tricks in the article, but one definitely surprised me! Here is #21 on the list:

“21. Get out your knitting needles. An afternoon of knitting can burn more than 500 calories (at a rate of about 100 an hour).”

burn calories

Okay, so I think it should say “crochet” not “knitting” or at least both, since they are fairly similar. I’m sure if you can burn more than 500 calories knitting, you can do so crocheting too! I think the point is to keep your hands and fingers busy to keep you from over eating when you’re bored. But I never knew you can burn that many calories from crocheting/knitting!! Perhaps the next time someone calls me lazy for sitting around crocheting all day I can tell them I’m exercising 🙂

I was surfing the net not too long ago and came upon something called yarn braids. Some people use yarn to make hair extensions!!! You can find it all over google images and everything! I thought that was soo neat. You should look it up Rachel!!

  5. Awesome! So, if you stitch/hook faster, do you burn more calories? 😉

  6. I love it – plus, us stitchy-types are prone to repetetive stress injuries, which could be considered a sports injury, you know, since we’re exercising and all… therefore I think we could technically be considered athletes. Just sayin’…

Hahaha, I was wondering how I’d managed to keep the weight off this winter! It always makes me angry when I am accused of being lazy for sitting about crocheting, how can anything that is creative be considered lazy? Now I can use this as a retort! There are some really interesting articles about how crocheting is good for the brain too, so we’re getting a body and mind workout – how’s about that eh?

Yay! What a great way to fulfill my New Year’s Resolution (work out more) with something that I actually *like* to do! 🙂

To burn additional calories and hoping to tighten some sagging muscles, I contract and release my abdomen and backside while crocheting. Another thing to try is straightening your legs frequently, to relieve stress on knees and maybe burn more cals. Don’t forget your fingers, wrists and arms to avoid injury.
