Crochet Pattern: Beaded Eyewear Retainer

By Amy Yarbrough – 10 Comments
With crochet thread and seed beads, this eyewear retainer will keep your glasses handy with personality. The fine chains of crochet hold the straps on the earpiece without the need of rubber to keep them in place. Experimenting with size hook and thread will give you different results, if you prefer a thinner strap. Don’t forget to add more chains if using smaller thread. Where are the beads found…can you name any stores that carry them? Being the yarn is #1 is it strong enough to wear over and over?

    • Hi Mary Ann,

You should be able to find these kind of beads at most craft store. I bought mine from Hobby Lobby, but I’d also recommend Michaels and Joann’s too.

The thread is pretty strong on its own, and the crochet material definitely increases its durability. I’d say it could stand up to constant use. But just so you know, I have not tested this theory.

      Hope this helps!

Will this pattern successfully hold the eyeglasses even if you do not use the beads? I have been looking for something like this, but don’t prefer the beads.
    Thanks!

    • Hi Bellewether,

The beads add a certain amount of weight, which helps keep a regular tension on the strand as it rests around your neck. But they are in no way required. The pattern can be made, and look just as good, without them. 🙂

Joann’s carries beads. Also, Ben Franklin. WalMart carries some, also. And yes, it should wear well with #1 thread.

  5. Theresa says:

A great idea but how do you attach the eyeglasses? Just tie a knot or poke through one of the end stitches? Please explain!

    • Hi Theresa,

I briefly mentioned in the beginning paragraph of this post that the strap will fit on the earpiece without having to use rubber. The stitches at both ends of the strap that do not have beads are going to be where you slip the earpieces through. It should be snug, otherwise the strap will slide off to easily.

      Hope this helps!

What size seed beads are you using? They come in different sizes. It would have to be a really big seed bead for yarn to go though, if they make them that big.

  7. Hi Lois,

The size of the seed beads I used were 6/0. I use a dab of glue rubbed onto the end of my thread tails when I plan to thread small beads onto crochet thread. The beads fit snug enough to hold still on the thread yet without being too tight to move.
