Free Crochet Pattern: Autumn Nesting Bowls

By Claire Golden – 1 Comment

My sister and I spotted a cute set of nesting bowls in a home decor magazine. She suggested that I crochet some, and I was happy to oblige. Our version is made in ombre fall colors: cherry red, pumpkin orange, and light yellow. I found some gold buttons that I think complete the look…and I like shiny things. I love how the bowls store so easily, with each fitting perfectly into the other. And they’re so easy to make! All you need to know is the basics of working in a spiral and you can make a set of nesting bowls for your home. They’re lined with needlepoint mesh, which makes them sturdy and capable of holding things.

Skill Level:

Finished Size: Large bowl measures about 8″ (20 cm) in diameter and 4″ (10 cm) tall, with smaller bowls snugly fitting inside

Materials:
Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 100 yards for large bowl, 80 yards for medium, 60 yards for small)
Crochet Hook G (4.00 mm)
2 sheets of needlepoint mesh
3 shank buttons
crochet yarn size 4

Gauge:
Rounds 1-5 of basic circle pattern measure 5″ (13 cm) in diameter

Please note that this method of making a circle does tend to appear hexagonal because the 6 increases are stacked. If this bothers you, feel free to stagger the increases. However, I wrote it like this to keep things simple and friendly for beginners.

Small Bowl
Follow Basic Circle through Round 10.
Round 11: working in back loops only, sc in each sc around
Round 12-21: sc in each sc around
Sl st to next sc and finish off, leaving 12″ tail for sewing.

Small Lid
Follow Basic Circle through Round 10.
Buttonhole: Ch 4, sc in next sc, sl st in next sc, finish off.

Medium Bowl
Follow Basic Circle through Round 14
Round 15: working in back loops only, sc in each sc around
Round 16-29: sc in each sc around
Sl st to next sc and finish off, leaving 12″ tail for sewing.

Medium Lid
Follow Basic Circle through Round 14.
Buttonhole: Ch 4, sc in next sc, sl st in next sc, finish off.

Large Bowl
Follow Basic Circle through Round 18
Round 19: working in back loops only, sc in each sc around
Round 20-35: sc in each sc around
Sl st to next sc and finish off, leaving 12″ tail for sewing.

Large Lid
Follow Basic Circle through Round 18.
Buttonhole: Ch 4, sc in next sc, sl st in next sc, finish off.

Assembly (all sizes)
Use the long ending tail from the bowl to whipstitch the lid to the bowl. Sewing about 16 stitches seemed to work best for me. Make sure the buttonhole is at the opposite end.
Cut pieces of needlepoint mesh to fit around the sides of the bowls. Sew them in place using a yarn needle and matching yarn. Do the same with the underside of the lids.
Sew a button on the front of the bowl to correspond with the button loop.
