| When I first accepted this project I had no idea how I was going to go about it but I knew the best way to start is to remember the basics. So I took some ideas and worked them out on paper before I took up my hook and started crocheting. As I worked I was thoroughly surprised at how well the horse was coming out. We all know that crochet is a beautiful and versatile craft. We can crochet almost anywhere and all we need is just a yarn and hook, right? While that certainly is true, it is also true that crochet can be done with one fewer item. Leave your hook at home, people. You can now crochet with your fingers!
In fact, “leaving my hook at home” is exactly how this technique came to light for me. I was recently on a road trip and I was excited for the drive because I had brought a current crochet project with me to work on in the car. I was excited until I realized that while I thought I had hooks in every size from E through J, for some reason my “I” hook was missing! Doh! Why is it always the “I” hook?

| Swirly pendants in bright colors are fun yet simple accessories. You can accent them with beads or string them on a cord on their own. In a tighter gauge, they also make interesting buttons. The pattern is worked from inside out in the back loop then turned and worked from the outside in in the front loop. |

Welcome to the Mystery Crochet Along (CAL)! I hope you’re ready for a fun adventure! Since this crochet along is a mystery, I can’t tell you exactly what you will be crocheting, but I can give you a hint. The object will be something that you can give to a friend as a Valentine’s Day gift, or keep for yourself if you find it too cute to giveaway. You’re always welcomed to make more than one! It is a small object, sort of like a toy, but is versatile so you can use it in more than one way.

It’s quite long, giving the wearer the ability to wrap it once and wear it long or wrap it twice for a closer cowl like fit. The stitches used are pretty basic and provide a mesh material that sits well against itself with the proper amount of drape. One of the nice things about crochet is that although we can share what we do with crochet groups, charities, and of course here on Crochet Spot, crochet is an individual activity. That means our only competition can come from within ourselves. The beautiful relaxation of crochet may come in part from the knowledge that the only expectation placed upon our crochet is our own.

| For me, Robyn Chachula’s book Blueprint Crochet: Modern Designs for the Visual Crocheter is a game-changer. I learned how to crochet with written patterns, so it never occurred to me that I might be a visual crocheter (I didn’t even know there was such a thing as visual crochet). Because of this book, I learned how to understand crochet diagrams and how to make join-as-you-go motifs.
