Crochet Pattern: Curly the Horse Appliqué

By Amy Yarbrough – January 14th, 2014 7 Comments
When I first accepted this project I had no idea how I was going to go about it but I knew the best way to start is to remember the basics. So I took some ideas and worked them out on paper before I took up my hook and started crocheting. As I worked I was thoroughly surprised at how well the horse was coming out. Now I am happy to present to you my very first horse appliqué, Curly the Horse! Curly the Horse Applique

Crocheting… Without a Hook!

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – January 13th, 2014 9 Comments

We all know that crochet is a beautiful and versatile craft. We can crochet almost anywhere and all we need is just a yarn and hook, right? While that certainly is true, it is also true that crochet can be done with one fewer item. Leave your hook at home, people. You can now crochet with your fingers!

In fact, “leaving my hook at home” is exactly how this technique came to light for me. I was recently on a road trip and I was excited for the drive because I had brought a current crochet project with me to work on in the car. I was excited until I realized that while I thought I had hooks in every size from E through J, for some reason my “I” hook was missing! Doh! Why is it always the “I” hook?

Crochet Pattern: Swirl Pendant

By Candace – January 12th, 2014 Be the first to comment
Swirly pendants in bright colors are fun yet simple accessories. You can accent them with beads or string them on a cord on their own. In a tighter gauge, they also make interesting buttons. The pattern is worked from inside out in the back loop then turned and worked from the outside in in the front loop. crochet_swirl_pendant

Mystery Crochet Along: A Gift for V-Day

By Rachel Choi – January 10th, 2014 57 Comments

Welcome to the Mystery Crochet Along (CAL)! I hope you’re ready for a fun adventure! Since this crochet along is a mystery, I can’t tell you exactly what you will be crocheting, but I can give you a hint. The object will be something that you can give to a friend as a Valentine’s Day gift, or keep for yourself if you find it too cute to giveaway. You’re always welcomed to make more than one! It is a small object, sort of like a toy, but is versatile so you can use it in more than one way.

Here is how the Mystery CAL is going to work:

  • Start right now! Use the pattern information below to gather your materials and start crocheting the first part of the pattern.
  • Every week a new part will be added to the pattern on this page. There will be a total of 4 parts. So be sure to bookmark this page and come back every week! I’ll send reminders out in the weekly newsletter and also on Facebook, just in case.
  • Feel free to leave comments on this post to ask questions if you need help while crocheting.
  • Feel free to email me ([email protected]) pictures of your work in progress and I’ll upload them to the website and show them off for you! Or you can post a link to your pictures in the comments section.
  • After completing the final part of the pattern, be sure to email me a picture of your final object! I’ll create a round up of all the submitted pictures so that everyone can see each others’ work. As a bonus, I’ll randomly select a “winner” who will receive a mystery prize.

Crochet Pattern: Vanilla Cream Infinity Scarf

By Amy Yarbrough – January 9th, 2014 Be the first to comment
Winter has just begun and days of frosty weather are still ahead! So here’s another wintry pattern to keep you warm for the winter. It’s quite long, giving the wearer the ability to wrap it once and wear it long or wrap it twice for a closer cowl like fit. The stitches used are pretty basic and provide a mesh material that sits well against itself with the proper amount of drape. I chose a cream color because there is just something irresistible about it. Think of your favorite color and try it out! Vanilla Cream Infinity Scarf

Tiaras are a must for any princess, and this set is perfect for royal playtime. Crochet these tiaras for dress up and playtime or for a princess themed party. They look good set upon a child’s head or a doll’s and can be made to match whatever is in the royal wardrobe. The tiaras are great projects for sparkly and metallic yarns. You can give the tiaras your own special touch by adding sparkly beads while you crochet! crochet tiara set

Crochet Pattern: Dimensional Flower

By Candace – January 4th, 2014 2 Comments
A flower with just a little bit of pop makes a great accent to finish off a hat or other project. It’s also good on its own as part of a handmade bouquet. Vary the look by pressing the center inward or outward or by changing color after the second round. crochet_dimensional_flower

Crochet Challenge 2014!

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – January 2nd, 2014 16 Comments

What do you want to do with your crochet in 2014? After the holidays settle down, hopefully you will be organizing your lovely new yarn and hook stash from generous friends and relatives. 😉 It will be time to reflect and set crochet goals for 2014.

One of the nice things about crochet is that although we can share what we do with crochet groups, charities, and of course here on Crochet Spot, crochet is an individual activity. That means our only competition can come from within ourselves. The beautiful relaxation of crochet may come in part from the knowledge that the only expectation placed upon our crochet is our own.

This is why it’s a great time to make an individual crochet challenge for 2014. Take a moment to look within yourself and ask yourself what it is you want to do with your crochet in 2014.

Book Review: Blueprint Crochet

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – December 31st, 2013 4 Comments
For me, Robyn Chachula’s book Blueprint Crochet: Modern Designs for the Visual Crocheter is a game-changer. I learned how to crochet with written patterns, so it never occurred to me that I might be a visual crocheter (I didn’t even know there was such a thing as visual crochet). Because of this book, I learned how to understand crochet diagrams and how to make join-as-you-go motifs. Suddenly, those beautiful Japanese patterns are doable, and motif projects aren’t as daunting. Preview the book on Amazon and read on for my full review to see whether or not you’ll like it.
