Yes, This IS Your Grandmother’s Crochet! (Because Grannies are COOL!)

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 8 Comments

Yeah, I said it! I love granny squares and with a granny square there is almost nothing you can not do! People sometimes say, ‘This isn’t your grandmother’s crochet.’ I know what they mean by that. They are trying to get at the idea that crochet is fresh, hip, and fun. But who said that grannies aren’t all of those things? I think it depends upon the person! Let’s talk about grannies!

My grandmother was a really interesting and cool person for all of her years. She was someone who, while keeping her foundation firmly implanted, kept moving forward, learning, growing, and changing with the times. I learned perseverance from her and she served as a strong role model. Through her example I know that we never have to stop changing, and never have to stop growing.

Similarly, granny squares are a fascinating structural cornerstone of crochet design. The pattern can be achieved with any number of rounds. Granny squares never have to stop growing. What makes grannies hip and fun are the variations that each crocheter brings to his or her project through personalizing the color, yarn, and hook size.

Granny square projects can be joined together in an unlimited number of ways in order to create any type of project! Your imagination is your guide.

I’m a cool Granny of 2 beautiful Grandchildren and love my Granny squares! I have most of my Mom’s Vintage Granny Square Magazines, patterns purchased from the newspaper/friends and a pamphlet entitled Rib Ticklers (Coats and Clark dated 1971, 35 cents) with 6 lovely granny vests photos for men and women. I have paged through a Women’s Day (dated 1975, 95 cents) many times, featuring the Actress Pam Dauber (before she was on Mork and Mindy) as one of the models. Both very Hippish! Thanks to my Mom I love to Crochet .
