Crochet Pattern: Expanding Diamond Motif

By Amy Yarbrough – 8 Comments
Recently I have written a couple of posts on making expandable geometric motifs, the Expanding Pentagon Motif, and the Expanding Geometric Motif Crochet Tutorial, where each shape follows a similar design. Unfortunately, not all shapes can be created so simply. My method is based on the amount of identical sides a shape has. But in the case of a diamond, for example, there are the same number of sides as a square but all sides are not identical. Expanding Diamond Motif

After reading a comment by a reader requesting help while using my tutorial to make a rhombus, or diamond, I set about making the necessary changes. So here is a pattern in the same expanding design but for a more unique shape!

Skill Level:

Finished Size: 4″ (10 cm) wide, 4 3/4″ (12 cm) long

Materials:
Light Weight Yarn (approximately 15 yards)
Crochet Hook B (2.25 mm)

Gauge:
Round 1 in pattern measures 1” (2.5 cm)

Need help understanding the abbreviations and symbols? Check out the crochet abbreviation chart.

Crochet Pattern: Expanding Diamond Motif
Round 1: make an adjustable ring, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc now and throughout), 15 dc in ring, sl st to top of beginning ch-3: 16 dc

Round 2: ch 6, dc in same dc as last sl st, *dc in next 3 dc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, repeat from * 2 more times, dc in next 3 dc, sl st in third ch of beginning ch-6: 20 dc, 4 ch-spaces

Round 3: (sl st, ch 3, dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in first ch-3 space, dc in next 3 dc, tr in next 2 dc, (2 tr, ch 5, 2 tr) in next ch-3 space, tr in next 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 space, dc in next 3 dc, tr in next 2 dc, (2 tr, ch 5, 2 tr) in next ch-3 space, tr in next 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc, sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 36 sts, 4 ch-spaces

Round 4: sl st in next dc, (sl st, ch 3, dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in first ch-3 space, dc in next 9 dc, (2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space, dc in next 9 dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 space, (2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space, dc in next 9 dc, sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 52 dc, 4 ch-spaces

Finish off or continue increasing in this manner until motif measures desired size.

Wow, I did not expect a response, but I am so grateful that you did. I am going to incorporate this shape into a couple of throws for the “boys” for the football season and your timely response has given me the Go for this project that I know they will appreciate.

Do you do the trebles every other row for expanding?

  3. Kaitlyn says:

I am trying to make this into a toddler size blanket but the opposite regular corners not the treble corners keep folding and it has been happe wing for several rows and I am only 9 rows in. Is there any way to keep this from happening or would I have to try and use a different pattern?

    Hello Kaitlyn,
Apparently, the increase is not enough. I haven’t tried this myself, but I assume you are going to have to increase more at the corners, whether in dc or chains, or both. If you still have trouble figuring it out let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

How much yarn do I need to make 99 squares with 5 different colors to make a baby blanket?

    • Amy says:

      Hello Amy,
It will depend upon how much yarn it takes per motif. Make one motif and calculate how much yarn it took, then multiply it by how many motifs you plan to make. Then, if you are planning to use an even amount of each color, divide how much yarn required by the 5 colors. It’s a good idea to get a little more than you might think to guarantee against mistakes.

      Keep crocheting!

By the way, love the name! 😉
