Crochet Pattern: Kiss Me Bag

By Claire Ortega-Reyes – 56 Comments
Tote this little bag along on a quick errand, or a date! Using sparkly yarn makes this great for formal events, too. Small yet sturdy, it can accommodate your essentials: wallet, cellphone and keys. I named the bag “Kiss Me” because the handle looks like shapely lips, adding visual interest and lending a natural grip for your hands.
It’s easy and quick to make, too. The whole bag is crocheted in one go; no sewing required unless you want to line it. The rectangular base is made first, back and forth in rows. The rest of the bag is then made in rounds.

Skill Level: crochet skill level easy

Finished Size: 9” (22.86 cm) wide x 6” (15.24 cm) long, when laid flat

Materials:
110 Yards/100 Meters Medium Weight Yarn
Crochet Hook US H (5.00 mm)
crochet yarn size 4

Gauge:
8 sc stitches x 8 sc rows = 2 inches (5.08cm)

Special Stitch:
Shell: 5 dc in one stitch

Crochet Pattern: Kiss Me Bag

Base:
Start by chaining 32.

(If you would like to alter the width of the bag, chain a multiple of 6, plus two.  This chain will be the width of your bag. Read this post for more help about chaining multiples.)

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, and in each ch across, turn: 31 sc
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn: 31 sc
By this point you should have a nice little strip of about 22cm/8.5″ long and 4 cm/1.5” wide. Do not fasten off. Work continues in rounds.

Body:
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in first sc (sk 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc [shell made], sk 2 sc, sc in next sc) 5 times, reaching end of the row. Continue work along width of the base. Repeat (sk 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc [shell made], sk 2 sc, sc in next sc) 5 times, reaching end of the row on the other side. Continue work along side edge. Sk 2 sc rows, shell in next, sk 2 sc rows. Sl st in first sc of round 1: 12 shells and 12 sc

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1dc), 2 dc in same stitch. Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc. (Sk 2 dc, shell in next sc.  Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc) 11 times. Skip 2 dc, 2 dc in same stitch as the first 3 dc of the row. sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 12 shells and 12 sc

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first stitch (beginning ch-3 of previous round). (Sk 2 dc, shell in next sc. Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc.) around, replacing the last sc with a sl st to the first sc of the round: 12 shells and 12 sc

Rounds 4-9: Repeat rounds 2 and 3 three times. (Repeat the two rounds more or less times to make the bag larger or smaller, if desired.) Do not fasten off, continue on to making handles.

Handles:

Round 10: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in same stitch. Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc. Sk 2 dc, shell in next sc.  Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc. Ch 11, sk 11 stitches, sc in next dc. (Sk 2 dc, shell in next sc.  Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc) 3 times. Ch 11, sk 11 stitches, sc in next dc. (Sk 2 dc, shell in next sc.  Sk 2 dc, sc in next dc) 3 times. Skip 2 dc, 2 dc in same stitch as the first 3 dc of the row.sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 8 shells.

Round 11: Ch 1, sc in same stitch. (Sk 2 stitches, shell in next stitch. Sk 2 stitches, sc in next stitch.) around, replacing the last sc with a sl st to the first sc of the round: 12 shells and 12 sc

Round 12: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around.

Finish off. Weave in ends. Add lining, if preferred. Make it even prettier by weaving ribbon through the shells, or by adding appliqués.

I am trying to crochet this bag.I chained 38 to make the bag a bit bigger. I am having difficulty understanding what to do once it’s time to start working in the round.
I am at a standstill in Round 1. Please help!!!! I often have trouble working in the round.

  7. Soni says:

Oops! I actually am at the end of round 1. I am confused @ the point in the pattern when it says continue to work the edge in Round 1. Again please help!!!!

    • Claire says:

Helo Soni, you’ll need to crochet around all the sides of the base. Sort of like putting up a fence on the whole perimeter of a piece of land… Not sure if that was exactly helpful; please let me know.

How cute Liv – a flower on it would be adorable!

  15. Sharra says:

I love this bag! I am just getting back into crocheting and I would say I am a beginner to advanced beginner. Right now I am working on the bag and I have done the bottom and one side and ready to do the first thin side and I am having issues getting it right. Everything I’ve done to this point has been rounds or back and forth crocheting ice never worked on the side and I seem to be messing up with it. Any help would be appreciated I am trying to make two of these for Christmas gifts. Thank you.

    • Claire says:

Hello Sharra, I think you’re at the point when we start working in rounds. Make a shell in the third row of the base, working the stitches on the side of the sc. Continue working around like putting up a fence around a house (does that make sense?). Let me know if I can help more… Maybe I misunderstood where you were in the pattern.

  16. Raquel says:

I just made this bag to see how it looks and it came out really nice, may have to make it alittle bigger (depending on who’s it for). thank you for the pattern. my mom wants me to make her one

  17. Nasrin says:

Wow, this is too good. I tried it, it came out very well. The notes you have given are so perfect. But I wish I would have a zip in the inner layer. If u can, can u please help me out.
Thank you for sharing your great work

    • Claire says:

Heya Nasrin, That sounds great! I think adding a zipped lining to the bag sounds super. Unfortunately, I have zero experience in attaching zippers (I hear it’s not as scary as we think). Maybe you can put an already finished pouch with zipper inside the bag–sort of defeats the purpose of a handcrafted bag, but if you do have something you can use then go ahead.

  18. Sunshine says:

    Hi Claire,

I love, love, love this bag! I have to make it for my mom! I love the finish and color of the yarn you used. Just wondering, what brand is it? Thanks for the great pattern!

    • Claire says:

Thanks so much, Sunshine! I used Red Heart Acrylic yarn–a local yarn that I don’t think is available outside the Philippines. It’s 100% acrylic. I would have loved to make it with organic yarn if I had yarn options though. 🙂

  19. Sunshine says:

Thanks for the quick reply, Claire! I think I’ve seen Red Heart Acrylic at my local Walmart. I can’t wait to get get some yarn and get started!

  20. Sunshine says:

I just started the bag today and already love it! I almost don’t want to give it to my mom! Thanks for the pattern and help Claire!

  21. debbi says:

help! i am stuck on round 2 where it says “2 double crochet in same stitch”. exactly which “same stitch” are you talking about? (i noticed it says the same thing in rounds 10 and 11).

reading ahead, another question from a very green beginner: i don’t understand that last part of the directions on round 2. “slip stitch in top of begining ch-3” what is ch-3? is it the chain we made at the very begining of round 2?

    thank you!

    • Claire says:

Hi debbi, The first stitch for that round is the ch-3, since it counts as dc. Make 2 dc where the first stitch is made. And yes, it is the 3 chain stitches made at the beginning of the round.

  22. Veronica Taylor says:

I am having a hard time on round 10 with the chain. It doesnt tell you if you have to go in to the chain. Following the directions the chain is also not in the middle. HELP

    Ronnie Taylor

    • Claire says:

Hi Ronnie, make sure that you skip the right number of stitches, so the handles go in the middle. Some parts of round 11 are worked into the chain stitches made in round 10.

  23. Sarah Dee says:

    Love it, very pretty.

  24. Jessy says:

I LOVE this purse! I’ve made a couple with different yarn and needle sizes and it’s pretty awsome. Would any one know how to go about lining the inside of the purse with fabric? because it has the “rectangle” part @ the bottom i dont want to just line it like a tote bag, i would like to make it to where it still has that with @ the base. Thanks =)

  25. James says:

This is an easy to do pattern and I have made it four times, once exact by pattern and the rest doing increases as stated a person could do. One was 1½ times wider, taller and 2 times the width of the bottom. I am planning on trying one in half the size for a Nintendo DS bag for our girl.
Thank you for making it available free to everyone.

  26. Marlene says:

why would you show a picture of one cute bag and give the instructions for a different one?
i was so excited about making the bag shown in the picture.
    (kiss me bag)

  27. Sarah Dee says:

I started making this yesterday in two different colours. I made mine bigger and will make it taller too. I chained 44, I think it’s the perfect size. Changing colours ever row looks amazing, almost checkerboard. Great pattern. One of CS’s best!

  28. Marie says:

OMG! I was looking for a quick, but cute bag to make as gifts and I think this will work out great. Its just big enough (as written) to hold keys, small wallet and sunglasses.

    Can’t wait to make this.

Question?: Has anyone made this using WW Cotton? Wondering how it would come out. I have a LARGE skein of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in Sunshine and may try it out.

    Marie

  29. LaTanya says:

I just finished making this bag and it is adorable. I am not new to crocheting but am just learning how to follow patterns. Love this pattern.

  30. Marcia says:

Clarie, made this bag over the weekend for my nine year old niece. She loved it and so did all the Mom’s at the birthday party! Think I will make myself one. Thanks. Marcia

  31. Jessica says:

I am working on the purse for my 2 year old daughter. I am using size 10 crochet thread. I have made a few changes to make the bag big enough since I am using a smaller thread. So far it looks super cute. Will let you know the out come.

  32. Gladys Martinez says:

hi am to her trying ti crochet a kiss me bag but am having a little difficulty wit rows 2-5

    • Rachel Choi says:

Gladys, rows 2 – 5 are rows of single crochet. You’re basically going to work single crochet stitches across the entire row. Let me know what part of the rows is confusing and I’ll try and explain it further.

  33. roberta says:

I love this purse! I have made 6 of these so far and everyone loves them! Thanks for such a great pattern!

  34. Felicia says:

Love this bag, worked up so fast and now I’m going to even out the edges. Can we sell the finished bag online? I plan to link back to the pattern 🙂

  35. Sil in CNY says:

Love this purse! Making it dressy using black nylon thread. This will be a gift for my daughter…..every girl needs a little black purse to go with her little black dress! Thanks for sharing this pattern!

  36. Sherry says:

I want to make this clutch so badly, but I am a little confused and wondered if you would help me? I can crochet in the round, but I guess because you start off in rows and then go to crocheting in the round – I’m confused. The pattern says to skip sc rows, but I’m not sure how or where the rows that you need to skip. Could you explain this to me? I love the purse – very, very cute. I’d appreciate any help that you would be willing to give me.
    Have a blessed day.
    Sherry Floyd

    • Candace says:

Sherry, the pattern starts you off with a rectangle then you crochet around that rectangle. After you finish the rectangle you make the shell pattern across the last sc row first. When you reach the end of the row, you continue to work the shell pattern along the short edge, skipping the edge scs of the rows indicated. The same goes for the other long edge (worked in the bottom of the starting chain) and the remaining short edge.

  37. Mariah says:

I’m slightly confused. On Rnd 10 it says Ch 11, sk 11 stitches. For that, do you mean to skip the ch st or 11 dc?
    Please help!

I love the bag .. thank you so mush for the pattern

  39. Yankybanky says:

I just finished this beautiful bag!!! I added 6 extra rows to the bag and 2 extra rows to the handle top. It’s so pretty! Thank you off this easy pattern. Btw, I worked it up in two evenings after work:-)

  40. Jo Atkin says:

Do you have a video of this purse? I have started it three times and cannot get the stitches to
Come out right at the end..I’ve been crocheting forever, and am really frustrated.
Maybe a picture would help…the purse should be fairly easy, and is so cute, I want to make it, but am afraid to start it again. I think it has something to do with the ending cluster.

  41. Pam V says:

I have made 3 of these purses so far….I just love them. I made one for a gift exchange and my 12 year old daughter loved it but wanted it in a different color. I made her one just a little bigger than the pattern and then she requested one for her best friend. They are so easy and work up so fast. Thanks so much for the pattern!!!

  42. Tanya says:

No matter how many times I count it I don’t get 10 shells in round 10! There’s the initial one (the one that is made in 2 halves), then 1, then the 4 after the chain, then the 3 after the next chain = 9 shells? where am I getting confused?

    • Rachel Choi says:

It looks like there may be a typo in the pattern. I’m thinking there should be 8 shells instead of 10. I believe the first repeat should be 3 times, instead of 4.
When you work round 10, do you have enough stitches on the previous round?

      • Tanya says:

Thanks Rachel! I tried working round 10 a few times and every time I got 8 shells so I just went with that and assumed it was a typo, the next round worked out at 12 shells again so I guess I did it right. Tomorrow I’m adding some buttons to fancy it up a bit!
