Crocheting on the Road?

By Emilee Gettle – 26 Comments

I take several road trips a year and when I say road trips I mean cross-country, 4 days in a car with husband and toddler road trips. It can be an adventure to put it mildly, but we all have a good time.

Every since I was quite young I have always taken embroidery projects with me in the car to pass the long hours on the road. However, after getting married and taking the front seat I had to change. After all, needles for embroidery getting lost in car seats and coming at my beloved driver was not a good mix. Rather distracting to the driver, not to mention occasionally painful! So, much to my husband’s relief, I decided crochet was the solution to my road trip craft cravings. I learned something else new, skeins of yarn can double as a neck pillows!

How about you? Do you crochet while on road trips?

Constantly! In fact, my family gets on to me, because whenever we take a long road trip, I take a huge trashbag of yarn along, just to keep my hands busy the whole time. And believe me, I use almost all of it! Car trips are some of my favorite times to crochet.

I keep a skein of yarn & a hook in the car at all times…I pick it up and work on a granny square whenever I wait in line to pick up my son at school, or when my husband is driving somewhere that takes more than a few minutes, or while waiting at the dr’s office, etc. I have 4 kids, so i have to sneak in these little pockets of time for crocheting.

    No, I am seasick ๐Ÿ˜€ unfortunately… but I wish I wasn’t ๐Ÿ™‚

I get motion sick very easily as well, so unfortunately I can’t unless I don’t look at my work very often and look up out the window (which is easy to do with some projects).

    I get motion sickness :(…
I wish I didnt! I have 3 road trips coming up, I will just drive the whole time!

I get motion sickness too. If I crochet in the car I have to look up out the window as much as I can without looking at my work. I have tried it on a very long trip when I really wanted to crochet.

I can crochet on the train, I don’t know why that doesn’t make me sick. I can read on the train too, but can’t read in a car or bus.

Movies give me motion sickness, too.

Heck! I didn’t think of that…. skeins = car pillows … will have to remember that the next time I’m in the car with my parents lol

Wherever I go — no matter the mode of transportation — my crochet and knit projects come with me.

I used to crochet in the car. I can’t any more since I get car sick pretty easy. I’m not sure why though. It never bothered me when I was younger, and now I can barely do anything. It is quite sad.

  12. Cindy says:

No, I get car sick if I do anything that involves looking down. Can’t read either. A brief look at a map is enough to get it started. Just have to sit and do nothing. But I can sleep. ๐Ÿ™‚

I used to get really bad headaches when reading/crocheting in the car, but I muddled through, and now suffer through the occassional headache.
May I just say that CrochetLites are wonderful!! I just bought one as a joke because my husband got irritated at how much I crochet, during TV and movie time at home (when my husband thinks that it should be dark in the living room for a movie viewing) But I tried using it in the car at night, and LOVED it! Now I don’t have to stop my busy hands when we drive at night anymore. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh yes. I take knitting with me usually, but crochet is great because it’s so portable and compact. Luckily my husband likes to do all the driving.

I crochet in the car because I am a very nervous passenger! I made 52 granny squares and put them together for an afghan that I still have.

When a road trip is announced, before I even think about my clothes, I think about what projects to take! But I always have something small in my car for those unexpected delays that my husband is famous for creating.

  17. Cami says:

Yes! I love crocheting while traveling. Actually, I crochet quite a bit while commuting! I believe I might have missed some good scenery while crocheting, so I have to remember to look out the window, too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Great tip about the yarn as neck pillows. I never thought of that.

I crochet in the car all the time. I always have a bag ready to take with me!
I’m always in the car waiting for my Son or Daughter.

I crochet and knit in the car all the time, while DH drives of course. He’s heard the sound of my hook falling under the seat and patiently helped me find it SO many times. Just returned from a trip and avoided the treasure hunt the entire way by putting my hook on a leash. I had some little rubber sleeves that fit over the end of my hooks (in one case with a few layers of tape on the end). I poked a hole in the end, threaded through a length of twine (yarn will work, too), attached the twine to the round part of a little brass safety pin, and pinned it to my project.

I don’t remember where I got the sleeves. They may be for cushioning hooks. It’s a little awkward to keep the twine out of the way, but it’s not as bad as bending over double trying to retrieve a wayward hook at 60 MPH. I was crocheting hats that my church group makes for the homeless and used the safety pin to mark the tenth row to avoid so much counting.

I don’t think my husband would let me leave home without my basket of crochet since when I’m crocheting I’m NOT telling him how to drive. (^_^). Some years ago I purchased a small, oval plastic basket from Dollar Tree. Hubby cut and finished a piece of wood to fit the bottom of the basket, made a hole in the middle, made a spindle to put in hole and a metal rod up with a loop at the top (hard to describe), I buy the large cones of crochet thread which fit on the spindle and the thread feeds up to through the loop. Oh, yes, there’s a hole in the top of the spindle where I can insert my crochet hook when not in use. Works just great. This basket goes where I go, in the car, to the doctor’s office when waiting for hubby, to the auto dealer while waiting for repairs, etc. I also crochet a lot while watching TV since I just can’t sit and do nothing but stare at the screen! And in the last year I’ve seen a similar creation like he made for sale in one of the catalogs, can’t remember which one, maybe Annie’s Attic. I told him to apply for a patent when he made it!! I also cut and paste my patterns on a 5×8″ card which stands right in my basket, easier to read from the 5×8″ than a book while in the car.

On the road or at my final destination, I will take my crochet wherever I go! I went to the beach with a few friends over the summer and decided to bring my bag of crochet with me. While there, after setting up, I got busy with yarn and needle. My friends thought I was being weird crocheting at the beach, but quite honestly, that is a really great place to crochet!

My friends kept calling me “grandma” the whole time, but I didn’t care because I was happy crocheting with the ocean breeze and the sunny skies (^_^)*

I have either a crochet or knit project with me at all times!

I grew up with a very bad motion sickness problem; then I married a sailing enthusiast! He introduced me to ginger root capsules, and the rest is history. I have become an evangelist. It works in moments, with no side effects.

Back to crocheting: I have lighted crochet hooks so I can crochet into the night! They are also great for crocheting dark colors, or on dark winter days. I also have lighted knitting needles, but prefer to use circular needles, as I am always dropping one. (If I am not doing something, I fall asleep)

I wish i could but i get carsick. But i spent allot of time waiting for my kid so then i just crochet then. But when we on holliday with the boat i can crochet allot. Its a sailboat so it takes allong time to get from a to b. But thats no problem with crochetting =-) i tryed to do some broidery but thats not easy cos ya need the needle, and the pattern often blowes away. So after allot of painfull fingers…(yes even that needle is sharp) i m now into crochet and loving it. My sis is now ordering me to make the triangle scarf that i made for my daughter for her aswell =-). Thank god the winter is comming so lots of time to crochet!!!!!

  24. Isabel says:

I can not because it gives me a bad headache.

  25. Donna says:

Absolutely! Since I always have several WIP’s I usually take along a scarf, or something similar that is comfortable to have on my lap, my smaller projects. There are 3 crochet hooks in the track of my seat somewhere! We honestly can’t find them! My “to go” box always has lot’s of hooks, markers and a pair of scissors. I’ll be taking that “extra” skein of yarn for a neck pillow next time!

    Blessings, Donna
