Do You Have a Favorite Crochet Hook?

By Rachel Choi – 37 Comments

Is there a hook you just love more than the rest in your collection? Or do you not play favorites? You may like one hook more, for its nice material or its convenient size. Perhaps it’s a special hook, because it was passed down from one generation to the next.

My favorite hook is my 3.25 mm Boyle hook. Since I work with a lot of medium weight yarn, this hook seems to find its way into almost every project I work on. It’s the perfect size for weaving in a loose end here and there, even if I do use a yarn needle. My 3.25 mm is very smooth and small, making it easy to maneuver into tight spaces. This hook was also my first hook that wasn’t plastic! It’s not a fancy hook, but it sure is my best friend when I need it.

Do you have a favorite crochet hook? If so, why?

Mine would have to be my first hook which was given to me by my grandmother. It’s nothing special- aluminum “Susan Bates” 5mm, but it was my gateway into the crocheting world. ๐Ÿ˜€

I love my clover soft touch G hook for when using cotton yarn, those hooks crochet so smooth and feel so good to my hands.
Also I really like my Boyle I hook for making blankets, espcially the color blue or purple. Just wish the Clover Hooks came in pretty colors.

  7. Sarah says:

It’s all about the Susan Bates size F hook ๐Ÿ™‚ It makes perfectly-sized stitches.

  8. Sandy says:

I have 2. My gunmetal colored Bates F hook…mainly because of the color. Its the only hook I have in that color. The other is my bamboo handled Bates K hook. I use it a lot.

  9. Judi says:

All of my Boye hooks are my favorites. The tips are more rounded than Susan Bates and slide through the yarn more easily. I’ve had them for decades. Do they still make them? All the craft stores feature Susan Bates.

  10. Lisa Hamblin says:

I love any Boye brand hook… not a fan of Susan Bates because the cut of the hook tends to snag my yarn. Never tried the crystal type hooks yet… the cut looks like Susan Bates so I haven’t purchased any of those. My favorite size hooks are G, H & I.

  11. Taylor says:

I have this boye green G hook that I just love so much for no real reason haha.

  12. Shannon says:

I love my Boye size H hook. It is purple and that is my favorite color. It also works well with cotton yarn and I have been woking alot with cotton.

  13. Kate says:

My 4.5mm aluminium hook is the one I love most, although I’m not completely sure why. I’ve used it for quite a few projects and it seems to be the nicest to hold!

  14. renske says:

I love my clover hook with soft grip!! I always use size 2!! I can’t live without it!

  15. Heidi says:

HMMM I think my FAV hook is my antique steel Boye #9 Or All of my Crystal Palace Yarns bamboo hooks!

  16. Jelibe says:

My fav hook is the first one I bought for myself a couple of years ago. I’d never crocheted before and was interested in learning so I bought a prym 4mm hook (metal with plastic end) and I’ve treasured it ever since.
I too like my boye hooks, the gunmetal colour is one of my favs but I can’t help feeling special when I’m using a gold coloured hook <3

  17. Perry says:

My favorite hook(s) are the Addi Turbo ones. They’re great in my hand and do terrific bullions.

  18. Katie says:

I love Boye. It was the first one I tried and I’ve tried others since but Boye is the best. I’m just glad my sister works at Hobby Lobby so I can know when they go on sale and stock up. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Bamboo K hook

  20. Kim F. says:

Hmmmm…I’d say my Boyle H hook because it’s one of the first hooks I’ve ever used. I love all Boyle hooks!

  21. Monique says:

I’d say my most favorite was my 4mm Disc hook. Its only short, like 5 inches, but it has a wonderful tapered head and deep throat, making it about perfect for anything.

  22. Brenda says:

Actually, I do. Not an actual favorite “hook,” but a brand. They’re a little bit more expensive, and you can’t find them everywhere. Since I find myself having to use “fat” pens and a trackball rather than a mouse (getting older, I suppose – sigh!), I also need the extra width of the handle on these “comfort” hooks. The handle is stamped “clover” and they’re almost the only ones I use, anymore. They don’t cover the entire size range otherwise available (no steel, not that I can see to crochet with thread, either!), nor do they make afghan hooks, but in the sizes available, I have them all – and use them happily!

On the other hand, I also experiment, when possible, to see if there isn’t another, even more comfortable, variation available. Unfortunately, the old favorites – straight, even natural materials – are no longer an option for me.

  23. little.miss says:

I love my bamboo hooks that I bought online. (I would never pay the high cost of some hooks, so luckly I found a cheap overseas seller to buy from.) I love the feel of them. As the steel ones always make my hands cold and the plastic seem to always break on me. Size wise If I could only have one size I would go with a g hook as thats the one I use the most.

  24. Michele says:

When I first taught myself to crochet more than a chain about 7 years ago I bought a size “H”, blue hook…it’s my favorite, everything I make using it seems to come out just right…lol.

  25. Nancy says:

Well, I am a fan of the Boye hooks. I have most sizes, and use them on most everything. That said, I have a new fav hook. It is a Tunisian cabled hook. Handmade of maple with my name on it. Large in size, it is a S. Just so much fun to play with, I got it from Stitch Diva. So smooth. As I make more money, I will order more sizes. Just spectacular. Did I say, I love my new hook? LOL!

  26. Darlene says:

My favorite is the one called for in the pattern! I have hooks from tiny steel 15 to a plastic S. I am less likely to use the smallest or largest, but have them if I need them. I also have Afghan/Tunisian hooks, double-ended hooks for crocheting on the double aka cro-knit, and a set of larger L-P wooden hooks.

  27. Sandie says:

My favorite hook for crocheting with worsted weight yarn is my Inox H hook, made in Germany – not the ones that were made in Mexico later, but the original. If I want to make something quickly, that is the hook I run to as my fingers just know what to do when I use that hook. If I am working with chunky yarn, my favorite hook is my cancer ribbon Corian hook, both because it is an excellent hook – yarn slides easily through it – and because it was made especially for me by a good friend. I treasure many of my hooks, but those two are my favorites.

  28. Heather says:

Bamboo hooks, use several sizes-love them!

  29. Susan says:

My favorite is my very first. A gold “G” Boye hook.

My standards though that I use all the time are the Clover Soft Touch! I can crochet by the hour with them and my hand doesn’t hurt as much.

  30. Megan says:

My favorite is my size J! It’s a Boye I believe

  31. Fleurdelis says:

Yes, I’m obsessed with my whole family of Clover Soft Touch hooks. If I have misplaced one, I will not start a new project until I find it or buy another one the same size. Those 40% craft store coupons sure come in handy! They turn up eventually with in a bag with a partially done project.
    G 4.5 is my fave.

  32. Kcrystina says:

I find myself always picking up any size G hook I have in my vicinity. G seems to be my favorite size of all the other sizes. I used to love a particular one more for the color than anything else. However, I recently invested in a Denise Interchangeable set & found myself falling in love all over again! lol I love how they’re small enough to fit just perfectly in my hand, they bend just a little bit and are extremely light – almost like bamboo. They have very quickly become my favorite hooks to work with.

  33. Jeanne says:

In aluminum, I love the Boye hooks. But my favorites are the bamboo hooks I got as a set for ridiculously cheap (13 hooks — sizes B thru N — for $20) somewhere online. Unfortunately, now I can’t remember where I ordered them from!

  34. mcjones says:

My favorite hook would be the H and that’s probably because that’s the one I learned to crochet on. I prefer the Susan Bates one. I’ve tried to use Boye before, but I found it frustrating to work with (the heads of the hooks are different).

  35. Kerstin says:

    My favourite:

    Hook-Size: 3.0 mm
Hook-Material: Rosewood (round; without a flat part)

I had a hook 3.0 made of birch tree [by “Knit Pro”], but it broke. after about 20 minutes of using… I suppose the product itself was not fine crafted, because I am not a tight crocheter and when it happened I was just crocheting a single stitch into a chain (so nothing “wild” really). But I did not want to try another one of the same kind, only to perhaps find out that this other one was bad as well.

It also had a flatened part, but here in Germany the most used hooks are by “Inox/Prym” and they are made of round steel and have a hard-plastic or soft-touch round handle (so, similar to “Clover”-ones, but not flatened at the handle) – so another point for not buying it again, because I am not used to work with a flatened hook, and sometimes I just turn the hook between thumb and index-finger instead of turning my wrist to get the strand (so my wrist can rest for a while and I don’t have to stop crocheting during this rest ๐Ÿ™‚ ), so the round ones suit me better.

But using a wooden one instead of a steel-and-synthetics one was an enjoyable experience, so I searched for a wood that was harder than birch – and that is among other things rosewood. And it is very beautiful, as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

The only stitches I do not use a wooden hook for are “cluster”-stitches [? (I think you call them “puff”-stitches in English)], because for the pulling of the yarn steel hooks are better.

    Greetings,

    Kerstin

Ooh, mine is a Susan Bates, 6 mm aluminum hook. It’s perfect for everything! Susan Bates hooks are far easier to work with, they are much smoother and come out of small spaces really well. This one I found under my couch a few years back, and I use it for so many things!
