It is designed to fit an average newborn head, and although baby heads may vary in size, there is extra length at the bottom of this hat to fold up and should stretch depending on the yarn you use. Rachel,
Thank you so much for a simple easy pattern! I am anxiously waiting the arrival of another niece and a niece/nephew later this year, so have added this hat to my list of things I need to make. Since we know one is a girl, I’m going to add a little crocheted flower to the side of the hat to dress it up. Just thought I’d share this idea while saying thanks!!

VERY EASY! I finished one in 20 minutes, thank you for posting! This hat is for a baby that is about 4-5lbs. The “average” newborn has a head circumference of 13-14inches and this beanie is 12. “Newborn” is a wide range and most people would just make this assuming it would fit on any newborn. This hat is perfect for preemies or small newborns. Thanks again for posting!!

Great pattern! I’m using this pattern to teach to a church youth group. We are making these hats to give to the hospital. Will also teach them to make pom poms to dress it up a little. Thanks so much!

Made one in about 30 minutes for my new grand daughter, I added 2 rows of ruffles around brim, so cute…

  5. Brandy says:

Very cute hat, I made it with leftover yarn I had from making booties and scratch mittens. Definitely will be a great addition and matching accessories. Absolutely love it!!!

Can I use the pattern for my beginner crochet class? We’re making these hats to give to our local pregnancy center! Thanks!

    • Rachel Choi says:

Yes, thanks for asking! If you’re going to print the pattern out to share, you can use the print function in your internet browser and it should print out nice and neatly. It should also have the url of the site on the top of each page. Have fun teaching your class!

Round 3: ch 3, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) around, sl st in top of beg ch-3: 36 dc

Can someone break this down for me, Im VERY lost?!

    • Rachel Choi says:

You will start by chaining 3. Then you will repeat the instructions in the ( ) all the way around. So you will do 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, etc. until you reach the beginning of the round. Then you’ll make a slip stitch into the top of the beginning ch-3 that you made at the beginning of the round. The top of the chain is the 3rd chain of the ch 3 that you made.

      • aubs says:

So, this mean’s I am doing a double crocket in each stitch all the way around until i get back to where I started and then I will chain three and start the next round?

        • Rachel Choi says:

hmm, not exactly. Did you already complete round 1 and round 2? If so, round 3 will go like this….

          ch 3
make 2 dc in the next dc
then make 1 dc in the next dc
then keep repeating the 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, etc. until you get to the beginning of the round.
then you’ll do the slip stitch in top of beginning ch-3

you’ll have a total of 36 double crochets when you are done round 3.

Let me know exactly where you get stuck so that I can help you better.

  9. Nan says:

Can I substitute sc for the dc’s in this pattern?

  10. Sophie says:

This is the ONE AND ONLY pattern I’m using for baby beanies. I have made them larger by using heavier weight yarns and/or larger needles. I have adorned them with flowers, pompom. Love this pattern. I hate making hats and booties, but I love your pattern. Now I’ll check out to see if you have booties. Keep up the good work.

Sorry to be a bother, everyone! I am a complete beginner to all this crochet lingo, so I was wondering if anyone could help me clarify this. How do you crochet “in” the fourth chain from the hook?
    Thanks so much!

    • Rachel Choi says:

      Hello!
When you beginning round 1, you’re starting with a chain 4. So to work into the forth chain from your hook you’ll insert your hook into the forth chain from hook (the first chain that you made). Each time you make a stitch you’ll insert your hook into that chain to make the stitch.

    Rachel,
I just found this pattern last week and have already made three different sizes. One for my seven year old granddaughter, one for my three year old grandson and one for my grandson due June 1, 2014. Easy pattern to do lots with. Thanks!! This was my first hat.

  13. Dianna says:

Could this hat be made with the peaches & creme 100% cotton yarn?

  14. Dianna says:

Thank you very much for this wonderful simple easy pattern.
I’m making these to donate to charity! 💙

  15. Peggy says:

How do you crochet a flower? or a ruffle.

  16. marion says:

round 4. If you double crochet in each double crochet continually for 6 rounds, you get ruffles. please explain

  17. Robin says:

I am new crocheter (is that a word?). Decided it was time to try making a baby hat. I finished this up in a couple of hours and know future hats will work up much faster. Great pattern, easy to read and follow. Thanks!

  18. Cherie says:

Hey hon, can you tell me if your ch at the beginning of each round is considered a stitch. Using round one in your pattern for an example, “ch 3, 2 dc in each dc around.” Is that chain counted as one dc? Do I dc in same st as the chain? I think that’s important to know. It can make a big difference in the outcome of any pattern.
    TY for answering

  19. Mollie says:

Thanks for sharing this pattern. I just completed my first hat and there seems to be a very noticeable “hole” where the chain 3 for each row is. Did I do something wrong?

    • Rachel Choi says:

Hi Mollie! You probably didn’t do anything wrong. If the hole is overly visible then you can try to chain tighter or ch 2 instead of ch 3 when you do your next hat.

  20. Ashley hansen says:

I’m using bernat baby yarn what needle would I use or is there a pattern!

    • Rachel Choi says:

      Hi Ashley!
Bernat baby yarn is thinner than the sized yarn required for this pattern. You can try using a slightly larger hook than the pattern requires. You know it’s the correct hook when you crochet the gauge with it and it matches the measurements for the gauge. It may require you to use a larger hook that creates a fabric with more holes in it than you want.
You can also use this pattern that is already designed with the thinner weight of yarn: http://www.crochetspot.com/store/?pattern=158

Was woundering what yarn did u use in this pattern

  22. Ashley Hansen says:

Hi Rachel I cannot get the pattern to download I’ve tried to use two computers!!

  23. Jaime says:

Great pattern! I read through some of the other comments and am delighted it’s so quick to finish. I was wondering if I could use size 3 yarn instead, since I have a lot leftover from a recently crocheted baby blanket. Thanks!
