Free Crochet Pattern: Super Bulky Faux Knit Beanie

By Amy Yarbrough – 10 Comments

Need a quick Christmas gift idea? This Super Bulky Faux Knit Beanie works up in a jiffy and feels incredible! The stretch is just like something knit and fits nicely on many head sizes.

Make up a handful of these cozy hats this Christmas and give them to the men, women, and children on your list!

Skill Level:

Finished Size: Fits Adult head size 20” – 22”, see notes on how to adjust size below

Materials:
Super bulky weight (approximately 100 yards)
Crochet hook K (6.50 mm) and N/P (10.00 mm)
3” pom-pom or make your own
Yarn needle
crochet yarn size 6

Gauge:
With N/P hook,
3 sc = 2’’
3 rows = 2’’
Gauge Swatch: 2’’w x 2’’h (5 cm x 5 cm) ch 4.
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 3 sc
Row 2 – 3: ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across: 3 sc
Finish off.

Adjusting hat size: For a tighter fit, subtract a few rows from the instructions. To change sizes, I would recommend subtracting quite a few rows from the instructions, and working less stitches in each row.

Crochet Pattern: Super Bulky Faux Knit Beanie
Row 1: with N/P hook, ch 25, sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 24 sl st
Row 2 – 54: ch 1, turn, sl st in back loops only of each st across: 24 sl st
Do not finish off.
Fold ends of rectangle and use size K hook to sl st together. With yarn needle, make a running stitch around one end. Pull tight and knot to secure, then stitch closed. Flip hat right side out.

Make a pom-pom and sew to top of beanie.

Why for the gauge swatch do you sc across but for the pattern for the super bulky faux knit beanie do you sl st in each stitch?

    • Amy says:

Hello Linda, the gauge swatch is just a quick simple pattern you can work up to check you gauge with the designers.

Thank you. Yes, I know that, but the swatch should be the same stitches being used in the pattern. Correct? That’s why I didn’t understand why the swatch was sc and the pattern says to sl st throughout. Please let me know. Thank you

      • Amy says:

In some cases the gauge is worked in the same stitch as the pattern. But this really doesn’t matter since what we are checking is our tension with the designers so that we achieve the most accurate finished product as expected. What matters most is that your gauge match the gauge given, despite whatever stitch you work for either.

        Hope this helps,
        Amy
