Free Crochet Pattern: Woolly Bean Beanie

By Amy Yarbrough – 2 Comments

Lots of ribbing and quick, crochet beans make up this chunky hat!

The band of the Woolly Bean Beanie is worked in long rows of thick ribbing so that it can be worn turned up for a more traditional look. The body however is worked in a completely different textured stitch called the Mini Bean stitch, which is essentially a single crochet puff. How to crochet this stitch is also included in the instructions.

This is a perfect hat for keeping the cold out and works up pretty swiftly.

Skill Level:

Finished Size: Fits adult head size 20 – 22″ (with instructions for changing sizes)

Materials:
Bulky weight yarn (approximately 200 yards) – I used one ball of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn
Crochet hooks H (5.00 mm) and J (6.00 mm)
Yarn needle

Gauge:
3 sc = 1’’
3 rows = 1’’
Gauge Swatch: 1’’w x 1’’h (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm) ch 4.
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 3 sc
Row 2 – 3: ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only of each sc across: 3 sc
Finish off.

How to Crochet Mini Bean stitch (puff): insert hook in next st and pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into same stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1 to close st.

Changing sizes: for a smaller hat, subtract a few rows from the Ribbing and continue instructions for hat as before. Note that the stitch count in the body will be the same as the reduced number of Rows in the Ribbing.

I though regular Wool Ease yarn was a category 4. You weren’t thinking of Wool Ease Thick ‘N Quick were you?

    • Yes, Christina, thank you, I did mean Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. I have made the change to the patttern.
