How Much Do You Crochet?

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 18 Comments

The inspiration for this post was my own personal reflections about my relationship with crochet. Crochet is a wonderful craft and since it’s portable, people may do it more often than some of the other crafts. However, I would like to get an idea of how often you, Crochet Spotters, actually crochet.

Have you ever gotten into the trap of reading and reading blogs all day, until you are so filled with inspiration that you’re a bit overwhelmed? Ironically, although you have so many great ideas, you don’t actually spend much time crafting? If this describes you, don’t feel alone. I think it’s something that creative people do from time to time. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our ideas and creative feelings that the actual making falls to the wayside.

Ideally, we would crochet every single day. While I certainly have had long stretches of time where I didn’t go a day without winding my hook through yarn, I have also had stretches with nary a stitch a week. What can I say? It happens.

I definitely think there are times when I crochet more than others. For instance, when I first started the craft, I was obessed. I read the book Stitch N Bitch Crochet, The Happy Hooker from cover to cover and did each and every exercise therein. I didn’t end up making each of the patterns, but I went through the book like it was a class! Crochet was new and very compelling. The challenge kept me going!

I’ve read about people who crochet while ill or bed-ridden. While thankfully I haven’t had that experience yet, I could see how looking forward to crochet every single day would be a great motivator and a source of calm.

Additionally, I think that people crochet quite a bit when they are motivated by a new baby coming into the world! Whether it’s one’s own child, a grandchild, or just a sweet, new friend, I know that people’s fingers are grabbing for hook and yarn as soon as they know a little one is on the way!

On the other hand, there are times when crochet recedes into the background. Life changes like a new house or a new job could take focus away from our favorite hobby. Changes in season like back to school, the holidays, or the beginning of summer could introduce new activities into the times previously reserved for crochet. Other times, maybe our attention just drifts away from an unfinished project and we begin to focus on other things.

I’ve previously written about how to find your crochet time, and I hope that we all do!

What about you? How often do you crochet? Do you find that your crochet time increases and decreases sometimes? If so, which patterns have you noticed with regard to the frequency of your crocheting? I always love hearing from you, so please leave your thoughts, reflections, and ideas in the comment section below!

I do identify with all that you’ve said. Crochet and knitting time goes in waves. Depending on the day of the week. Work load, house work etc. I check Instagram and my blog feeds daily for inspiration with tons of ideas to do. As they say, so much yarn so little time.

Laydilyke, it is so nice to hear that! I’m picking the hook back up, but it’s funny how we’re drawn in different directions at different times. I’m finding myself more interested in paper crafts than normal as of late. Crochet is still my number one, of course! ๐Ÿ™‚

I crochet on my lunch hour at work, it helps me to just take a break from thinking about work for an hour. I also crochet in the evening after I’ve finished with dinner and just relaxing for the evening. Sometimes I find myself with multiple projects going at once. One for my lunch and one for the evening. I also go in phases of how much I crochet because I go between crocheting and sewing. I find myself daydreaming about what I am making or what I’ll make next. Obviously an obsession!

I try very hard to fit SOME kind of needlework into my day. There are days where I just don’t have the time, but most days I do something. I have been working on perfecting my knitting and spent a lot of the last couple months doing that almost exclusively. But when I need a quick project, I turn back to my crochet. Most of the gifts I am making for the holidays are crocheted because it takes me TOO long to knit anything. But I don’t necessarily need an excuse..holiday, event…to crochet. Sometimes I just see a pattern I like and want to try it. And Pinterest has become my friend…it has SO many pages of projects to inspire one. ๐Ÿ™‚

I crochet in the evenings while watching TV….. when it’s time to unwind from the day. I want to crochet so much more in the cooler months. That’s when I am most inspired.

I feel the same way as you and I crochet at the same time. I also crochet when I have to go to the doctors office or to the dentist or when I’m riding in the car on a trip out of town. I love crocheting because the projects are usually small and portable. I got back in the crocheting when I broke my arm right after I retired, so I was looking for something that didn’t require two good arms.

I never have taken my crochet projects to appointments, etc. I always have a book instead.
I do crochet when my husband watches sports on TV. It makes the time more bearable. lol

I crochet almost every day unless I am just too tired. I have problems with physical fatigue but my mind is always working in overdrive, so I have to be doing something like reading, etc. to keep it occupied. Crocheting and other crafts are very therapeutic to keep me occupied, relaxed, and productive. I try to stay away from timesuck websites, especially social media. And sometimes I MAKE myself crochet if I want to get a project done, even if I’m not enjoying working on it anymore. Creative people have a tendency to lack discipline, so that’s something I make an ongoing effort to work on.

I crochet almost every day, occasionally I do take a day for myself, but I even take my crochet to all doctor/dentist appointments for myself and my children. When people ask what I am doing I say “therapy”.

I crochet mostly in the evening when I finally get to sit down in my chair in the livingroom.
I try to get in that chair during the day but it doesn’ often work. I keep a project by my chair at all times. I do mostly blankets or afghans so I cannot tote it too long after I start it. It is when I can relax and stop thinking about what has to be done. Whatever it is it can wait on the crochet time.

I either crochet or knit something almost every day.

I just finished a bridal garter for my future daughter-in-law. And am making some bookmarks. But am having to make circles to put over mason jars as wedding gifts.

I am also crocheting cloths for Christmas gifts.

At this time of year, I am crocheting all my Christmas things. So I am crocheting all the time. I do take breaks to eat and to check out my e-mails. I love crocheting. I started crocheting full time back in 1976, when I had to have 2 major surgeries when in 3 months of each other. I couldn’t do much, so I started to crochet again and have been doing it almost full time since then.

I crochet EVERY day for an average of 6 hrs a day. I sometimes sew & knit but crochet is my favorite fiber craft. I have an etsy shop which will be filled with my newest items (lots of kids’ sweaters and baby rugs) as soon as I’m done with my only scheduled craft show for this year. I also have a large stock now of crocheted and felted handbags that I need to photograph and put online….

I’m a truly dedicated crochet addict!

My crochet goes with me everywhere! Doctors’ appointments, road trips, lunches at our Senior Center, Bingos, family get-togethers (they know me as the Crazy Crocheting Aunt!), shopping trips in places like Menard’s where I sit while my hubby shops, while watching TV, ANYplace I can squeeze in a row or two!

  12. Tricia says:

I crochet every day. I try not to have more than one project going, but sometimes my imagination just won’t wait! I don’t use a pattern for most items. I am more into techniques, creating new crochet items and/ or the challenge of looking at an item and figuring out how it is made.

I now crochet every day, pretty much all day! I retired 3 years ago and have not stopped crocheting since! I absolutely love it! I am in the process of kicking off my online business soon. I find new inspiration every day thanks to the internet. I love seeing all the blogs, you and all your companions are very inspirational! When I find a pattern I like, I tend to make several of the same thing in different colors. I am totally obsessed with sting of all types!
