How to Crochet a Mobius

By Candace – 22 Comments

A mobius is a ring with a half-twist that is often used to crochet a scarf, cowl, shawl or wrap. It’s a fascinating form because it has only one side and one edge. One method of making a crochet mobius is to simply make a strip, make the half-twist, and sew the ends together, but if you like a challenge, here’s how you make a mobius starting with the foundation chain.

Start with a chain (mine is 50 ch long) and twist one end 180 degrees.

Join the two ends, making a slip stitch in the bottom loop of the last chain.

Ch 3 and dc (or use whichever stitch you prefer) in the bottom loop of this chain and place a removable stitch marker in the stitch you just made; it will mark the beginning of the round. Crochet into all the rest of the bottom loops of your chains. Your hook should now be opposite your marker.

Dc into the top loops of each initial chain stitch until you reach your marker. Sl st in the ch-3. You’ve completed the mobius.

At this point, you can now crochet around your mobius normally until it is the desired width.

Have fun crocheting your mobius! Feel free to leave a comment below if you have questions or need help crocheting your mobius.

I love this and will definitely try this. I really enjoy crocheting because of
the need for counting and other math skills. The mobius strip
has been a favorite of mine since age ten, when introduced in math class. Thank you!

Awesome! Thanks. I Just asked my local yarn shop for a mobius crochet pattern since I was jealous the knitting class was doing one. They didn’t have one. So this is perfect timing, and it looks easy!

The crochet version (I think) is easier to do than a “knit one”…..it works up really fast too, with I skein of bulky yarn & a large crochet hook. One skein is all you need.

I love this method! No chaining and turning, no counting of stitches, no worries about joining the ends of a long strip. I have made several Mobius scarves and everyone has asked: How did you do that, I can’t even see the join! I just let them think it’s magic.

When you say “bottom loop” do you mean the “hump” at the back of the chain?

  5. Eva says:

Oh, I cannot believe it’s so simple. Well … at least it looks simple enough … might change my mind when I try πŸ™‚ Now … off to choose yarn and needle!

    Terrific…simply neat!

  7. Eva says:

LOL – it wasn’t simple. I’m not getting a moebius … I’m getting a circle? It was twisted at first, but now I don’t know what happened on the 2nd row. maybe I should stick to simpler crochet! LOL

  8. Candace says:

Jana, yes I do mean the “hump.”

Eva, it sounds like you may be untwisting it after you get to the end of the bottom loop stitches. The piece should stay in the configuration you see in the third picture, and you shouldn’t be back at your marker until you’ve completed twice as many stitches as you chained.

Oh, NOW I get it.Tried twice and didn’t get it right. Tomorrow – I’m gonna give it another try πŸ˜€

I guess I’m too old, because I’ve never heard of a mobius. I like it though and think I’ll try it.
