Crochet Pattern: Take a Picot Mitts

By Candace – February 14th, 2013 4 Comments
Be prepared for transitional weather with a pair of fingerless mitts for those days that are too warm for gloves, but too cold to go without. These mitts are ribbed at the wrist and the finger openings have a neat picot trim around the opening edge. crochet_take_a_picot_mitts

Crocheting with Friends

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – February 13th, 2013 11 Comments

I am always astounded by the versatility of our craft. While crochet is perfect as a solo activity, maybe relaxing on the porch with some tea in the evening, it makes a fine group activity as well. Stitching while chatting over coffee with friends adds an entirely new dimension to the crafting experience.

I have to admit, my love of fiber crafting was very clearly driven by connecting to a craft community. At first this community was online, through podcasts and my personal blog. I later joined Ravelry and started a crafting group in Mexico City. It took me a long time and a lot of perseverance, but I finally attracted a core group of similar yarn lovers and we shared tips, patterns, encouragement, and most of all, friendship. We eventually became the first Mexican chapter of the Crochet Guild of America, Ganchitos Mexico City. The Ganchitos are still going strong although I’ve changed locales.

Crochet Pattern: Boot Toppers

By Emilee Gettle – February 12th, 2013 5 Comments
It won’t be long and instead of snow we’ll be enjoying spring showers. I have a trusty pair of rubber boots that I love to tromp through the spring puddles in. I often where them to town or in the garden. When I wear them all day long the hard rubber can rub on my shins. So, I crocheted these boot toppers to cushion my shins and for a chic update to my rubber boots. This project can be made in about an hour or less and it’s a great way to use up extra yarn. It’s also a great project for beginners. Make several in a rainbow of colors to suit your moods.

By Rachel Choi – February 10th, 2013 3 Comments
There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! Here’s a quick pattern to crochet for your lovable pooch. This pattern set contains 3 different ball sizes so you can crochet the one that best suits your dog’s size. The balls have a nice textured pattern to keep your dogs engaged. You can also add a bell, rattle, or squeaker inside the ball. The balls are fun to toss around and play fetch with, but are not intended to be chew toys for strong chewers. If you’re doggie will share, you can also give these cute balls to babies who are starting to explore different textures!

Crochet Pattern: Heart Pendant

By Candace – February 7th, 2013 14 Comments
You could wear your heart on your sleeve–or you could dangle it from you neck, which is slightly more anatomically correct. If you’d rather not loop a chain through the bail, you can make the final chain long enough to fit around your neck instead. The pendant can also be stiffened with starch. crochet_heart_pendant

Fiber Art as Playground by Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – February 6th, 2013 11 Comments

I thought we’d take a peek into the world of crocheted artworks every now and then. This week we’ll talk about Japanese and Canadian artist Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam.

When appreciating the massive artworks by MacAdam, you don’t have to keep your hands off the art. Many of her works are literally colorful playgrounds meant for children to enjoy, but they didn’t start out that way. The idea was born when children climbed onto a gallery installation resembling a hammock. MacAdam observed as her artwork as it changed shape and was inspired.

Crochet Pattern: Valentine XO Applique

By Emilee Gettle – February 5th, 2013 3 Comments
It seems like I’m on a roll with a Valentine theme. I love quick projects that can be made in a jiffy and that can be used multiple ways. This week’s Valentine XO (or hugs and kisses) appliqué can be used for so many projects. You could use it for scrapbooking or making handmade cards. You could also make several, join them together, and create a cute trim. You could also join them into a headband. It’s also great in pastel colors for sprucing up baby gifts. The sky is the limit with this ultra-easy project. If you are new to fingering yarn this pattern is perfect.

Crochet Pattern: Rectangular Vest (9 Sizes)

By Rachel Choi – February 3rd, 2013 2 Comments

There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! Crochet this fashionable, tunic length vest and wear it with a belt or alone over a shirt. It is crocheted all in one piece with no sewing required. The pattern works up super quick for its size, because it uses a large crochet hook. The large hook gives the vest a loose drape while still providing warmth. This pattern is great for all skill levels, especially for those who have never crocheted clothing before and would like to try!

February’s Crochet Holidays 2013

By Caissa "Cami" McClinton – February 2nd, 2013 2 Comments

We began our discussion of crocheting for the holidays here, but I wanted to take it even further. I think holidays are lots of fun, and there are some very unusual holidays that I’ve found, along with our old favorites. I thought it would be fun to match Crochet Spot patterns with holidays each month. We don’t need an excuse to crochet, but a little motivation never hurt! Here are some of February’s fun and fabulous occasions to crochet!

Bubble Gum Day – February 1 – Crochet one of these quick and beautiful bags and fill it with bubble gum to give to a friend. 🙂

Ballet Day – February 7 – Ballerinas are known not only for their grace, but also for their hairstyles. Crochet one of these three bun covers for a ballet enthusiast in your life.

Valentines Day – February 14 – One way to show you care is by giving this sweet heart to your sweetheart.

Love Your Pet Day – February 20 – Spoil your pet with a new dog bone or cat toy.

Academy Awards Night – February 24 – Whether you are on your couch or on the red carpet, rock it granny square style! 😉

National Tooth Fairy Day – February 28 – Your child will love placing his or her lost tooth in this and finding money the next day!

What do you think of these crochet holidays? What else would you recommend to celebrate these or any other February observances?
