Posted in Tutorials and Help on February 22nd, 2015 by Tameko Barnette – 5 Comments

Sharing crochet as a social group or with a friend who loves it as much as you do is one thing, but teaching crochet in a workshop is a little different. However, it can be a joyous experience and one worth trying for those who are between jobs, need a fun part-time job, or perhaps, you are looking to become an entrepreneur.

Either way, in the world of crochet, you have a plethora of inspirations and opportunities. A great idea is to put your years of crochet wisdom to good use and facilitate crochet workshops. It’s not as complicated as it may sound at first, especially, if you are not familiar with facilitating a workshop of any kind.

Crochet is hands down one of the best ways to relax on a sunny or a rainy day. With yarn and hook in hand, the only thing that matters is the pattern you wish to make a reality. This is crochet at its best.

If you think about some of your favorite crochet creations, you’ll probably find that many of them tinkle your fancy because of the pattern, but also because of the colors you chose to use. The color of the creation is just as important as the creation itself. But how can we take color choice to another level with our crochet creations?

This is the last installment of this series on transforming your crochet mistakes. In truth, some of the mishaps that occur in our crochet projects aren’t always mistakes. The air is filled with the energy of harvest time. I am excited about getting started with my crochet projects. I grab a skein of multi-colored earth tone, medium worsted yarn and my favorite J-size crochet hook. I begin to crochet a hat from memory.

It comes out all wrong! I examine this so-called crochet hat wondering where I went wrong. Now, I don’t attribute this mistake to the fact that I haven’t crocheted a hat in two years. Oh no! I just dive right in head first from memory.

Crochet Basics: Understanding Turning Chains

Posted in Tutorials and Help on June 25th, 2013 by Caissa "Cami" McClinton – 15 Comments

Have you ever noticed that while double crocheting in rows, you need to “chain 3” before starting the next row? Have you ever wondered what this is called and why you need to do this?

Well, the chains at the end of the rows are called “turning chains,” abbreviated tch. They exist because they allow your crochet room to grow evenly. Later we are going to see what it looks like and feels like if you try to work back and forth without turning chains. As you can imagine, it gets pretty cramped and a little wonky!

Photo below shows a double crochet swatch with no turning chains!
