As the final few weeks of summer wind down we are enjoying the last of our homegrown watermelons. At first it seemed like we would never run out of our favorite summer treat, but alas they are dwindling. We’ve even taken several to our state fair to be displayed along with the rest of our garden’s bounty. It is so hard to believe that we are approaching the end of August. Before we know it the cool winds of autumn will be blowing. Remember summer by crocheting this easy watermelon potholder. This project makes a great gift!

I think sunflowers are one of the most beautiful flowers in the garden. Their smiling faces, which follow the movement of the sun, remind me to always look for the bright side of every circumstance and to turn my back on dark days. I find crochet easily as therapeutic as enjoying a beautiful flower garden. So, I decided to combine the two this week. This project can be whipped up in no time. I plan on making several sunflowers, joining them at the petals, and creating a lacy scarf. Another use for this easy pattern is coasters!

Owls symbolize wisdom and education. You may have finished your formal education a long time ago. However, you can never learn too much! Why not make a list of the crochet stitches or techniques you want to master this year! We should all strive to continue our education no matter how old we are or if we are enrolled in formal classes. Add something new to your learning priorities this year! In just a few short weeks it will be time to get the kids back to school! Have you seen all the school supplies flooding into the aisle at the stores? As a kid I was always excited by the back to school goodies. I couldn’t wait to crack open that new box of crayons and take a big whiff of their wonderful waxy aroma. You can’t forget the smell of a pencil being sharpened, no matter how long it has been since you were sitting behind a desk. So, this week, I pulled out my fingering yarn and crocheted this pencil bookmark to keep your place!

My family and I love vintage clothing. On the weekend you can find us at an antique store or estate sale. While my husband snatches up old tools, I like to sift through boxes, baskets and trunks of old linens. Years ago clothing, quilts and even dishtowels were an art form! Crocheted appliques are a quick and easy way to embelish and personalize your linens. The time commitment is slim to none. It’s a project with instant gratification! This week I created a little mushroom for you to add to your children’s clothing, linens or to make a bobby pin with!

Since it is unbearably hot outside I’ve been enjoying my AC and an afternoon with my crochet hook. I like to add new appliques to my craft stash to spruce up a gift, card, scrapbook or other project for gifting and the holidays. Now is the perfect time to stock up and this project is a great one to add to your arsenal. Cherries are the perfect way to top off a beautiful dessert. From cupcakes to ice cream, cold drinks and pies cherries have the reputation for being the finishing touch to a fine confection! Use this project for an extra sweet handmade accent!

I absolutely despised peas growing up and had more fun mashing them on my plate than anything else. However, when I discovered what they tasted like fresh out of the pod, I changed my mind. They are the perfect garden snack, wrapped in a little pod package. This week I crocheted my own peas in a pod. I used wool yarn, which can easily be felted too. This project would make a great pin. However, your children or grandchildren might claim them for their play food collection. I’m thinking of felting a few of these pods onto a wool purse too!

The weather is perfect for picnics. There is nothing like cooking outdoors. The fresh air and fireflies are perfect dinner companions. This summer why not plan a homemade picnic right down to the napkin rings. Bake some fresh bread, gather some ears of corn from your local farmer, slice open a ripe melon from your garden and let the fun begin. I love collecting vintage tableware and linens for our picnics. These easy napkin rings are the perfect complement. They are so fast to make you could create several sets in various color combinations to stash away.

I found a beautiful siamese kitty at the humane society who has forever won a place in my heart. However, she has one bad habit and that’s chewing on electric cords. More than once my computer speakers have went dead and my mouse kicked the bucket too, thanks to her naughty vice. So, I became desperate to find a solution. Thankfully, through the crafting grapevine, I heard of crocheting a cover over the electric cords to discourage chewing. I decided to give it a try and it is oh so easy to do! I recommend using black scrap yarn to blend in with the cord.
