Giant Doily Rug

By Rachel Choi – 28 Comments

You may have seen this awesome rug, since it was made about a year ago, but I just came across it today and had to share! This lady (not sure what her name is) hand crocheted (no hook, just hands) the giant doily rug with what looks like rope.

Who ever said that doilies had to be cute little dainty things for dinning room tables. Now I dare someone to take a doily pattern and make a giant rug with it! Find more about the designer here, (thanks Erin Lea for the link).

After seeing this I had to go look it up to get more info! I found the maker here: http://www.ladiesandgentlemenstudio.com/originals/megadoily/

It almost makes me want to go buy a bunch of cotton rope and a book on doilies… 🙂

My grandmother used to make throw rugs out of Wonder Bread wrappers, which is nifty cool, but this is so beautiful and inspired…applause, applause.

I had been thinking of similar experiment with smaller rope. I just may have to give this a try.

I love this idea. I would like to try something similar only using heavy twine to make curtain hangings for our windows. Is there any information out there as to how to learn to do this with rope or twine?

  13. Claire says:

It’s in the book – “crafting a meaningful home” I don’t recommend it unless you can afford to buy 300 yards of jumbo 12mm piping cord. it would cost me £209 to buy the cord alone. No thanks!

    wow! it’s amazing!

WHERE can I find the pattern/instructions?

    • Rachel says:

Hi Nancy, I’m not sure there is a pattern for this. But you can try contacting the designer by going to her site (link is in the post). I believe there is contact information there.

It’s so beautiful. I just finished one using 5/32 cotton cord and a size s crochet hook. It’s beautiful too, however, I would really love to tackle the big one. It’s a very impressive piece. do you know where I might find the pattern? Thank You.

Also, the first link in the entry still goes to her website, and some info is in the SHOP section. 🙂

Wish I could have this in my house. I know I will never make it and the links on this to the maker of the rug- aren’t working. 🙁

    *sigh*

  20. Marina says:

Just kidding! Her website is http://ladiesandgentlemenstudio.bigcartel.com

But again, *sigh*!!! Its $600 dollars!

It would be fabulous if it could be dyed. Love the rug, it would look fabulous in a girls room.

you can find these anywhere on google…and they work just as well, if not better cos it’s cheaper, if you buy washing line rope…you can even go back and buy 2 or 3 skeins of rope at a time, spread out over time it doesn’t seem too expensive..join the rope by sewing skeins together…hope this helps

Wondering how much rope the crocheted rug takes, where I can buy it, and how to learn hand technique…
