In just a few short weeks it will be time to get the kids back to school! Have you seen all the school supplies flooding into the aisle at the stores? As a kid I was always excited by the back to school goodies. I couldn’t wait to crack open that new box of crayons and take a big whiff of their wonderful waxy aroma. You can’t forget the smell of a pencil being sharpened, no matter how long it has been since you were sitting behind a desk. So, this week, I pulled out my fingering yarn and crocheted this pencil bookmark to keep your place!

How to Crochet: Initial Half Double Crochet Without a Starting Chain

Posted in Tutorials and Help on July 24th, 2012 by Candace – 7 Comments

Forgoing the turning chain in crochet helps when the chains make your edges unsightly. Making an hdc without a starting chain is fairly simple once you get the hang of it. It will have your edges looking neater in no time.

To see left-handed views, hover over the picture with your mouse.

Pull the chain on your hook up to a little more than hdc height and hold the loop to the hook. The arrow in the picture points to the front half of the loop.

Crochet Pattern: Dog Security Blanket

Posted in Best Crochet Patterns on July 22nd, 2012 by Rachel Choi – 3 Comments
There’s a new pattern in the Crochet Spot Store! This security blanket can be crocheted for a boy or a girl. The doggie is a cute little character that a child can carry around and cuddle with, especially if your child loves dogs! The pattern requires a light weight yarn so that it isn’t too heavy for a child. It is crocheted in the round like a spiral so that there are no seams in the blanket or the dog. Feel free to crochet it using your child’s favorite color!

Crochet lovers and book lovers unite!!! This is for crochet enthusiasts who love to read. There’s nothing like a good book, not only during the summer time but all year long. In crochet, bookmark patterns come in a variety of designs that can help you stay on point with your reading. Crocheted bookmarks are excellent gifts as well. One of the cool things about crocheting bookmarks is that most patterns are fairly easy, so you can do them in high volume if you have the time and desire.

Crochet Pattern: Mushroom Applique

Posted in Free Crochet Patterns on July 18th, 2012 by Emilee Gettle – 2 Comments
My family and I love vintage clothing. On the weekend you can find us at an antique store or estate sale. While my husband snatches up old tools, I like to sift through boxes, baskets and trunks of old linens. Years ago clothing, quilts and even dishtowels were an art form! Crocheted appliques are a quick and easy way to embelish and personalize your linens. The time commitment is slim to none. It’s a project with instant gratification! This week I created a little mushroom for you to add to your children’s clothing, linens or to make a bobby pin with!
