5 Reasons to Crochet a Gift

By Rachel Choi – 9 Comments

It’s that time of year again, when we’re all in a hurry to get gifts crocheted for the holidays. Gifts can be crocheted for almost anyone. Get those hooks moving and crochet those gifts! If you don’t have enough motivation, here are 5 reasons to crochet a gift.

1. Personal Touch
If you know someone who seems to have it all, try crocheting him or her a gift instead of purchasing one. A crocheted gift has a personal touch. Just the thought of you taking the time to crochet the gift is worth more than anything you can purchase. The crocheted gift doesn’t have to be large. Choose something that you think the recipient will love, like a scarf, jewelry, or even a toy!

2. Customize
When you make it yourself you can choose the yarn color and material, the perfect pattern, and adjust everything so that it’s customized for your recipient. If your son only likes green hats, or if your mom only wears items made with cotton, that’s no problem!

3. Cost
Crochet projects can cost a lot to crochet if they’re large or if you choose an expensive yarn. But if you’re on a tight budget, make something smaller and choose a yarn that is affordable. When you make your gift, you can choose how much you spend on supplies.

4. Something Unique
You don’t have to worry about aunt Silvia getting the same gift from cousin Pam. When it’s crocheted, the chances of repeat gifts are slim. It’s something unique that folks can treasure. You can even crochet something that others won’t think of such as a Mermaid Tail Blanket, Lanyard Wineglass Holder, or Animal Baby Booties.

5. Practice Crochet Skills
As they say, practice makes perfect. So keep crocheting those gifts and increasing your skills. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a new crochet technique such as broomstick lace, Tunisian crochet, or crocheting with beads.

So what are you waiting for? Crochet those gifts! What gifts are you crocheting this year? What motivates you to crochet them? Join the conversation in the comments below!

Rachel, these are all wonderful reminders & at just the right time too. Recently inspired by a friend of mine, I have a few Christmas crochet projects that I’m working on now. As for the practice part, I’ve admittedly learned to “cheat” with my projects LOL. When I find that my gauge is just a bit off I make up for it in the next row.Thank you for creating Crochet Spot. I’ve been a fan for many years.

I made some butterflies and strawberries on lingerie bags and they came out very cute!

I have been making Twiddlemuffs for Alzeimers groups and a friend said they would be lovely presents for a little girl, so I have made one for her and my little granddaughter – not with all the hanging parts and buttons but just pretty colours and different yarns, plain and fluffy. .

I love to give crocheted gifts, but I never plan ahead. I usually give people something I already made awhile back. I am also not good at planning ahead for making decorative items for holidays or seasons. I start thinking about making Halloween things at the beginning of October! Then I think, well, it’s too late for this year now. Wouldn’t it be great to have a “crafting calendar,” marked with the times to start planning and making for each season and holiday ahead of time?!
